We live in a Victorian terraced house and are thinking of doing a loft extension. That will add a second floor, and so I know that all the doors from the bedrooms onto the stairwell will need to be firedoors so the stairwell is protected.
The question I have is about the doors on the ground floor. At the moment, you come in through the front door into a hallway. The stairs are directly in front of you and the entrance to the living room is through a (fire door) on the right. The entrance to the kitchen is down the hall past the stairs, but there is currently no door in the doorway to the kitchen - just a high open archway. Will we have to fit a door to this space? There was clearly never a door there historically.
I don't know if there are special rules for the ground floor and/or for older houses. I suspect we will need to fit a door - if we do I will want to make it some kind of hidden sliding door that we will never use in reality to have minimal impact on the original look. Has anyone had experience of this or something similar? Any tips/links to the actual law on this?
Thanks!
