How big is your study?

Had a brainwave to use a smaller bedroom as a bathroom which means having to put the study in what was planned to be a bathroom.

Could a space 2.3m across (externally) and maybe around 2.5 deep work as a study? Really just need a desk and would use Ikea filing cabinet type things for that with lots of storage for paperwork.

Would love to hear if anyone has a small study and find it works :)

That would work. We have a study unit built into our hall and we close the doors on it when it’s not in use. It’s a huge hall though!

However, I would build in units. My keyboard flap slides away and all the storage is built in. You could do this along one wall. Then get a settee that can convert to a small bed. You can then have it as a guest room if need be.

Yes. That would be a double bedroom in some estate agents eyes!

I’ve always used the smallest bedroom as a study. Last house was 2.5m by 2m and was perfectly sized

Current is 3.2m x 3.2m and feels very spacious even has a single bed in it for guests.

Pretty much the same size as my daughter’s bedroom- fits in a toddler bed, chest of drawers, toy unit, massive corner wardrobe, basket of toys and still loads of floor space. Definitely doable as a study

Ideal!! Thank you :)

Means having the fourth bedroom at the front of the house which I don’t really like the idea of but unlikely it would ever be used as a bedroom.

I really appreciate the answers!

That sounds like a great sized room for a study. I've had both a small and large one (different houses) and liked the smaller one better as it forced me to be ruthless about clearing out unnecessary paperwork and other junk.

I'm not a naturally tidy person and more space = more mess!

@lll77 I JUST said this to my OH ... a huge study might mean ‘I’ll jist stick that in there’ and it becomes a dumping ground!

We’d originally planned a much smaller study with a larger bedroom but the architect decided to make the two rooms equal size but now I’ve rethought it all in my head!

8.5 by 6ft here and it fits a desk, chair, and some cube storage units. Should be fine.

Yes that would be perfect. We have a lovely big study (tbh this has its own problems, it ends up with other stuff in there as it is a lot of wasted space really) now but previously had a study space that was only about 1.5m x 2m. We had a built in desk & units to make the most of the space but it worked perfectly.

Have you thought about having the front bedroom you are not so keen on as the study and guest bedroom? The reason built in storage is great is that if it has doors and drawers, you can hide everything away! It’s neat. Think built in desk that pulls out. It saves such a lot of space.

That room is currently marked out as the study but because I’ve now decided I want a bigger bathroom (using smallest current bedroom for this) that room would need to bedroom otherwise we lose one if you see what I mean.

All very much in the plans stage!

Glad to hear you’ve all coped with small studies. I can’t wait to have one as I am actually just about to start studying!
