How do I paint over wallpaper and what kind of primer/paint is necessary?

Am shortly about to start renovating a 1950s brick terrace house. Downstairs and stairwell has got one layer of plain wallpaper (in very good condition) with just one layer of liner paper underneath.

Will make a final decision about whether to steam it off AFTER rewiring and plastering patch ups have happened, but would like to know what kind of primer and paint is best to paint over wallpaper??? Anyone got experience of this? Will just be painting the whole house white (to go with Scandi style furniture/interiors). Thanks!

None. Just two coats of paint is fine unless it’s a weird texture or metallic finish.

Thanks museumum

MIL has been told to use oil primer before painting over wallpaper, but if I can cut out steps that would be fab! Will be painting in January prior to moving in February.

Wallpaper is quite plain really and in excellent condition, if it wasn't drab pensioner taste from the 1990s I'd consider keeping it.

Seemed pointless to steam off when surface is in good condition

Mine was fine with a decent coat of quality pain. You could see the outline of the pattern after one coat but not after two.

I have painted over various different sorts of wallpaper and have only ever used a couple of coats of emulsion. Works fine.
