Cost of tiling too expensive?

Looking for a little advice. I have had a quote from a local tiler of £1600 to tile the bathroom and kitchen. The bathroom is 2.4 x 2.4 with a 1400x 800 walk in shower, all I am having done is the floor, three walls of the shower and a splash back behind the basin. In the kitchen, the tiler said its about 10m2 for the flooring and 5m2 for the walls. All grout and adhesive included.

Does this seem too expensive or on budget? The house is in KT4 so expecting London prices but still seems expensive. Any similar experience with prices would be grateful appreciated!

I know tiling is a skilled job and happy to pay what needs to be paid but I have no benchmark!

Never accept the first quote, OP. Get at least two others from different tilers. I’ve just saved £300 by shopping around for a fencing job. You have a bit of leeway to haggle if you have several people tendering for the same job.

Not including tiles, but everything else? It looks a bit high but not ridiculously. Get more quotes.

Babdoc, thanks for reply. I am getting more quotes I just need a benchmark really! Smile

I’ve been told to budget £40 psqm where I am (1 hour from central London, affluent area)

^ that’s for walls - flooring may be more as potentially more prep to get floor level?

sjward · 19/10/2018 14:09

No it does't include the price of tiles, I have brought those already

PurpleFlowersInMyHair - The floor is wooden boards so just requires matting to be put down in the kitchen and the bathroom will have insulation board and underfloor heating so shouldn't need any work to level.

It's working out about £53 psqm, maybe its normal for Worcester Park?

Approx 22m sq of tiles in total. So he’s charging about £72 per sq m? That’s a bit high - I’d expect about £40 per sq m. Unless it’s fiddly with small tiles and lots of cuts, or a lot of levelling to do.

He's supplying grout and adhesive... that's easily 100. Doesn't sound outrageous to me if he is a good tiles, even the really shit ones charge 40 psqm

We've just gone for aqua wall panels for our new shower room. They look fantastic, don't need grout, are easy to clean and easy to install. They can also be used in the kitchen. Might be worth considering. We've gone for the one below which is £16.66 per sq metre, although we bought it elsewhere on special offer.
