Best nice outdoor light that is also a security light?

I like lights that are a bit like this:

naice lights

But none of them are security ones and in fact I can’t find any nice security ones! Our light is really useful for seeing people at the door and lighting the way to the bins etc, so I do need it.

I think the picture or link is missing?

We got some nice Phillips pir led lights. Maybe put pir in instead of security in your search?

Piccalillisnooze · 19/10/2018 15:08

That’s weird, it is working for me? Just click on the blue?

Ooh, pir search, hadn’t thought of that.

I can't see anything atall in blue for some reason!

What is the behaviour you want the lamp to have?

To come on when it's dark?

To come on when a person, vehicle or animal moves near it?

loveka · 19/10/2018 16:21

I want it to be motion sensitive, so to come on so people can see to open the door. It is a holiday cottage.

I am moving in to it in February though! Can't wait.

PigletJohn · 19/10/2018 16:25

then, if you can't find a PIR lamp you like, buy any lamp and put a PIR nearby to turn it on.

With an LED bulb the running cost will be insignificant., so don't be mean with the timer.

As WhirlygigWhirlygig said Philips have some nice looking ones - they are available on Amazon

Don't know if this link will work: www.philips.co.uk/c-m-li/choose-a-lamp/mygarden/latest#filters=CONCEPT_MYGARDEN_SU%2CFK_CL_EXTRA_FEATURES_MOTION_SENSOR&sliders=&support=&price=&priceBoxes=&page=&layout=12.priceDesc.p-grid-icon

That’s weird, loveka answered your question piglet, but is def not the OP! But similar request. Can you explain pir switches to me a bit more?

Quite often "security lamps" are sold with PIR (movement detector) or photocell (light sensor) built into them. But they are available separately. Examples on my TLC link above.

For example, if you have two or more lamps around your path or door, you might want them all to come on together.

So you can buy a separate PIR and have it wired to control any number of lamps. The ones sold separately tend to be better quality than the ones built into lamps, and they enable to buy any shape, size or style of lamps that take your whim.

There are some quite high-current PIRs and Photocells available, for people who have a larger home and have an array of floodlights, but a large building like a castle or cathedral might better be wired up by an electrician using a contactor.

BTW, I think a porch light is better arranged to come on at dusk, and go off either at dawn, or at, say, midnight, rather than switch itself on and off every time somebody walks or drives past. There are light switches designed to do that automatically.

A porch or path does not need a dazzling light. My own porch was too bright at 8W energy-saving and now has a 4W LED which costs approximately nothing to run.
