Hi all,

We are a young couple looking to move to Manchester and found a place we quite like in a Cheadle Hulme. Unfortunately we don’t know the area too well but initial impressions seem to be nice area with good schools, good transport but limited quality bars/restaurants/etc, especially compared to Didsbury and Altrincham for example. Given this is based on a drive through the centre I’d like to get opinions on what Cheadle Hulme is really like. Is there much more to do? Is it getting nicer or are people moving out?

Thanks in advance

As far as I know both Cheadle and Cheadle Hulme are nice areas in Stockport. I live 2 miles away (also in Stockport.) I think they're both popular with youngish working couples or families (late 20's onwards) who are wanting to buy a nice property in a decent area but can't afford the likes of Chorlton or Didsbury. Both have a few pubs/bars/restaurants but aren't as lively as Didsbury (but more choice than in Chorlton).
Bramhall is another nice area in Stockport. but more expensive (getting towards Didsbury prices).

Oh and there's a makers market once a month in Cheadle.

I always think Cheadle Hulme is a bit nicer than Cheadle (very bay window) as my mum used to say Smile I don’t live there, but we’re moving to Cheshire imminently and having house hunted in that general area for the past 2 years, I’d say it’s a nice area to live.

It’s nice. Bit more suburban than didsbury. Depends what you are looking for? Manchester is enourmous and different things have different perks

Thanks. We are a young family looking for somewhere in South Manchester or Cheshire with good transport links into Manchester, good schools and a local community with cafes, shops, bars, restaurants, etc. We have a decent budget so aspiring for some of the nicer areas if possible. Any further advice on CH and other recommendations welcome!

I like both 🙂 Cheadle has a better Main Street, but Cheadle Hulme has nicer/more affordable houses.

Cheadle Hulme has a new primary which is the feeder for Cheadle Hulme High (good yet oversubscribed).

I'd pick the one with the house I liked the best.

It sounds as though you don't live nearby? I would be really reluctant to buy a house without knowing the area. Those 3 areas that you've mentioned - Cheadle Hulme, Didsbury and Altrincham are all really different. Can you rent for 6 months? House prices arent increasing significantly at the moment, they're pretty steady so you're not going to lose out financially by renting - it would be a big financial mistake to buy then realise in the short term you had to buy again.

Thanks. I agree not ideal to buy when we don’t fully know the area but for a couple of reasons we will be in a better financial position buying now as opposed to in the next 6-12 months. The other problem is that we have found a house we quite like in CH whilst absolutely nothing seems to be coming up in Didsbury/Altrincham/Wilmslow despite healthy budget. What do you think of those areas individually and anywhere else you would suggest looking?

It’s lovely round there, but have you noticed how loud the planes are in some parts of the area as they are well on descent into airport. The other side of Stockport is quieter.

Have you tried looking in The Heatons there are some really nice houses up there, easy to get into Manchester and has a good vibe. I always get them confused I think it’s Heaton Moor with all the wine bars and delis?

Whereabouts in Cheadle Hulme are you looking?

namechangedtoday15 · 20/10/2018 11:59

I think it depends whether this is a long term / short term house and what your future plans are. We're close to Altrincham and I think it's pretty hard to beat both from a young professional point of view and for young family. Regeneration of the market means there are lots of great restaurants / bars, Hale on your doorstep too. Trafford (which covers Altrincham) is widely recognised as the best place in the North West (the country according to The Times) for schools and the metro is fab for easy access to the City Centre / airport etc (as driving into the city centre in rush hour is crazy). Good transport links).

That's not to say that the other places you've mentioned are not good, I'm obviously biased Wink
