Removing wallpaper, can I paint directly on the plaster underneath?

I have just pulled off a square of (badly applied) peeling wallpaper off and the lining paper came with it. The lining paper was put up about 12 years ago and was also not done to any great spec. We've got a lot of mould that comes through the wallpaper so we'll take it to the plaster and treat it with mould killer before redecorating. I detest lining paper and think the mould wouldn't be so bad without it. (FYI: we ventilate, dehumidify and dry laundry outside whenever possible to try and mitigate it) Is there any chance the plaster will be in any state to just paint over or will we need to reskim?

I think if you are removing paper and plan on sticking to paint on flat walls, the flatter the better. We got our whole place replastered/reskimmed where needed 10 years ago, and only have paint, no wallpaper. It was worth every penny. The walls are so flat and beautiful.

If the plaster is up to it, just painting will be fine. Any flaws or dings will show though.

The lining paper will have been put up for a reason, often because the wall wasn't in good enough nick to just paint last time. But you might always get lucky .
