Moving round the corner

We’ve had an offer accepted on a property 10 doors down. We can see it from our bedroom window!

Would you get a removal company? Or DIY?

For context- I’ll be heavily pregnant, our parents are in their 60s/70s. We currently live in 3 bed family home with all the usual furniture and stuff that comes with it.

Would a removal company laugh at us?!

I would get a removal company unless you have lots of nice strong friends but TBH I think it is a bit of an ask to get mates to risk their backs lugging wardrobes etc.

We’ve done moves like this a couple of times. It was ok to diy when we were going from rented to owned. But used a removal firm when buying and selling. It doesn’t really matter how far your are moving, you’ve still got to pack up, store everything until money goes through and then unpack the other end

I’d use a removal company, in fact I’ve used one for a closer move than that. They didn’t laugh, and obv it was a bit cheaper than normal as no long drive.

A friend of mine moved to the house at the end of their garden. Removed a fence panel and had a line of people handing stuff along. It went relatively easily.

My brother moved up the road... up a hill which wasn't very steep unless you were carrying a sofa/bed/wardrobe. Then it was very hilly. We moved everything by car that fitted so it was just the very big stuff. He didn't have much stuff either as was going from a room in a shared house to his own house, but it was a pain in the arse. Really, really bad idea.

Given the price of packing materials, the insurance that comes with removals doing the packing, the time contraints of moving day and the fact you are pregnant - just cough up for removals with packing.

We moved four doors down on the same street. Use movers!

We were moving from rented to bought and had a short overlap so we moved a lot of stuff ourselves, but booked movers for a morning to move our large furniture and appliances.

The removal companies didn’t think it was odd in the slightest. One of the guys told me that he once moved a family out of one house and into the one next door; they removed a couple of fence panels and took everything through the garden.

We DIYed a short move like yours and it was the most disorganized move I ever made. I have always said if I were to do it again I would get the movers in. We overlooked the need to move the (4ft) fish tank....I have no idea how.

We did this - not quite as close, but not far!

We got the movers.

Thanks guys- you’ve saved me a lot of pain and headaches - we’re definitely booking a removal company!

The difficult part of moving house is not driving from the old house to the new one - it’s packing up and getting everything out of there, and then getting everything into the new house and unpacking it all. Use movers.

We moved a couple of roads over but I wouldn’t have contemplated doing it without movers. Timelines are tight on removal day you don’t want your buyers hanging around while you’re still moving stuff out.
