What are these poles/reinforcements between houses?

I want to view this house - DH doesn't as he thinks that the poles/struts between the house and the next one indicate something structural and the EA may not be honest (i.e. he doesn't want to waste money on surveys etc if it's obvious there is a problem).

They are victorian houses but different styles so appear to have been built at different times. The fronts of the houses are raised up from the street (so steps up the door).

Anyone have ANY idea what could be going on? Is there a non worrying explanation?

They are indeed structural. They are struts to support the walls of both houses from spreading away from the rest of the houses. It is worth having a structural engineer look into them as part of the survey to ensure they are still sufficient to support the side of the house.

Are there any others in the same street area with the similar struts?

Hmm no there aren't any other houses with them, but the house on the right is the start of a long row of about 10 terrace houses.

The house on the left (the one for sale) is semi detached, but the other side doesn't have the poles.

Is it a sign of correcting a problem (e.g. subsidence)?

It seems a temporary fix to me... but as previously said the 2 houses are falling together
No way would I even consider viewing it

@Alexalee DH agrees with you on not considering it worth a viewing!

The poles have definitely been there for a few years, but maybe you are right and it's a complete no goer.

Shame as location, size, style and price are all perfect (though could well be why it's in our price bracket...)

The EA might be honest - afterall you can't hide them from a surveyor! Ask them.
