Really high loft bed (single or double)

duriandurian · 17/10/2018 09:39

Hoping this is the right topic. We want to buy v high up beds for our two DC. Bedroom ceilings about 9ft high. Prefer no built in desk below.
Any ideas where I should look?
Thanks very much.

They are a pain in the backside to change the bedding btw. Dd had a fairly low cabin bed and even it was tricky

civicxx · 17/10/2018 10:12

Ikea :)

duriandurian · 17/10/2018 10:21

Ooh will look at ikea. Thanks
I hadn't thought about changing the bed linen. That could be a weekly annoyance.
I was thinking about building in some bookshelves in the alcoves behind it, so I might look at some sort of ladder. Would have to make sure the bed could take my weight too. Hmmm.
Thanks.

They are a complete pain. It's really hard to change and make up beds, you can't sit up properly in them, they are hard work when the kids are ill!

So glad when we got rid of DD's. Biggest waste of money ever

Rattymare · 17/10/2018 11:56

I agree totally with Bell - Don't bother

Xocaraic · 17/10/2018 12:08

Don't do it.
An absolute nightmare every sodding time you are changing the bedding.
Plus, the added bonus of kids falling from ladders at night, bumping their heads when the sit up and, as PP said a royal pain in the bottom when kids are ill.

civicxx · 17/10/2018 12:09

How old is your child? My daughter had one at 7, she changed the bottom sheet herself easily, she did the duvet on ground level & dragged it up.

Agree that sick and high beds aren't good! Fortunately my child was never ill when she had hers :)

civicxx · 17/10/2018 12:10

You could get a mid sleeper?

moonbells · 17/10/2018 12:17

We have one with a convertible bottom area so a chair turns into a low-level bed. Great for sleepovers and when ill.

It's also got a wardrobe, small desk and a giant drawer under the convertible chair. And can cope weight-wise with an adult so we don't have to change later.

Putting it up was fun though!

mum2015 · 17/10/2018 12:21

Why do you want a high bed? If room is small, it makes it feel even smaller! Get a good height single bed and use underbed storage for books etc. DC has a box room and we have put a mirror door full height pax wardrobe from IKEA and bed with under bed storage boxes with wheels.

duriandurian · 17/10/2018 12:36

The rooms are of a decent size but they really really like the idea of sleeping up high.
Will ponder on the D&V issue. That would be genuinely horrendous. I reckon kids (5 & 9) could prob be persuaded to do the sheet change and I can do duvet and pillow.

Do you have an option for if someone breaks a leg? It happened to us but fortunately ours had a futon built in underneath that he could use.

ifiwasabutterfly · 17/10/2018 19:05

We had one I couldn't wait to see the back of it. Changing the sheets was a bloody nightmare. DS could never quite get the sheet pulled down enough, and I struggled to lift the mattress when I was on it.

Unless you desperately need one for space I would avoid.

duriandurian · 17/10/2018 20:04

Oh man, this is the first ever time we have owned our own house and can let them have the rooms as they like. They are super keen on high up beds and giant 6ft bean bags underneath (buddabags - which would prob do in a broken leg scenario).
Anywhere else but Ikea? I do take on board your points but they are so excited about having them. Need for accessible vom bucket also noted as per above! Thank you!

Roomtogrow.co.uk have some lovely ones- you can get desks etc for underneath but they’re optional. We have bunk beds, I climb into top bunk to change sheets but don’t find it that much of an issue. Have put the mattress on the floor when our top sleeper had d&v.

Knittinganewme · 17/10/2018 21:10

Argos is a possibility, DS has this one but in natural wood and his is the mirror image. He's 18 and still sleeping in it (I keep trying to get him to change but no). He has a little shelf for a clock and water and a hanging bag for books. He's had it a while and I'm shocked by the current price.

We bought from these: www.strictlybedsandbunks.co.uk
DS (age 7) has a medium height one, can't stand up under it but he plays under there a lot and he really loves having a higher up bed. It's at a height so I can kiss him goodnight when I'm standing next to it, and it easily supports weight for me to sit up there and read bedtime story. It's a minor nuisance to change sheets but you get used to it. They're fine to support adult weights. No puking since he's had it, but I'd just make him up a camp bed nearby if needed. We also got a higher one for our box room in a narrow single, as we keep the tumble dryer and loads of junk in there but wanted to have a spare bed for when my mum visits.

They were tricky to put together, but nice and solid.

FesteringCarbuncle · 17/10/2018 21:30

My kids hated them and so did I
Like others said they are a pain to change. I hated not being able to sit on the bed to read to them or just be with them
Thanks kids hated not being able to sit or lounge on the bed. You are either in bed or out of it if that makes sense
IMO they are better in theory than in reality

MrBennOfFestiveRoad · 17/10/2018 22:03

DS has a good one from Aspace, with a futon and good size desk underneath. I wanted one with a futon so that he could sit and read but we have high ceilings so he can easily sit up in bed too, he loves it. I’m fairly tall and can also sit up in it easily, which makes it fairly easy to make/change sheets.

Ohyesiam · 17/10/2018 22:06

They are mildly harder work to change, rather than a nightmare. But you do less cuddles definitely, which is a downside,

SavoyCabbage · 17/10/2018 22:19

Stompa have plenty and always have a clearance section.
