Best way to light front of house?

House stands back from the road and is up a rather dark corner. I was thinking of a series of spots, pointed upwards at the brick to just highlight the house a bit.
All the images I've found are for big fancy US properties when I've looked for ideas.

Has anyone done any accent lighting and wouldn't mind sharing a pic?

Is there a drive or a path? You might want to light that. We have security lights for the front steps and the drive/turning circle at ours.

We live in a very dark spot! We have a light (from B &Q) in our open porch which is above the house name plate. This is a light that has an up lighter and down lighter in one, so the up bit illuminates the porch, the down the name - this has been useful for people finding us. The only other front light we have is a pir (passive infra red I believe) which comes on when someone approaches the house. We find this is sufficient. We don't have any accent lighting. I quite like the dark so I can see the stars, one of the joys of rural areas and little light pollution.
We only turn the lights on if we are expecting to need them (guests, going out etc). Otherwise we quite like the pitch black.

Not practical to light the drive with anything other than solar unfortunately as it's a long drive and would be very expensive to do.

We're just kind of tucked away up a long drive and anyone visiting at night doesn't really notice us there.
We have a small porch light but I'd like to make the house stand out a bit more.

My parents were in a similar situation to you. They fitted a flood light at just under gutter height on the front of the house which shone down the drive. It wasn't pretty (many jokes about landing lights), but it certainly lit the way. Gets round the wiring problem.

We have lights in our gate piers and one that comes in to light the drive as you approach the house. We have lights all round the outside and a light in the top of the porch. On a patio we have pillar lights and these could be used up a drive. Or use ones set in.

Wondering whether to post a picture tomorrow to illustrate the issue. I'll have a think.
Thanks all

Right, sod it, outing if you know the house but, Photo for illustration.

I'm standing inside our front fence to take this. The driveway sweeps around to the right side of the picture.
Obviously there is a small pond cough in our front garden which I'd love to light but I suspect would end up phenomenally expensive.

I was thinking of putting some spotlights in to the sides of the front windows to light up the brick, but have no idea how bright they would be. Currently have solars up around the drive but putting anything more permanent in would be expensive and awkward as we have to maintain around the pond.

Help!

Wow, love the pond

No idea on lighting, jsut have movement floodlights on mine.

SistersOfPercy · 17/10/2018 11:22

I want something thats on at dusk really, movement lighting is great and we do have that on the garage, but it's daft things like the takeaway driver who doesn't realise there is a house nestled up the corner, especially with darker nights drawing in.

I have some solar spots on the pond that are frankly useless with something that size anyway 😂.

Wow that's lovely. No suggestions... unless you somehow make your driveway entrance noticeable and say it's the fence posts with fairy lights or whatever on them

Murinae · 17/10/2018 14:00

We have the Ring floodlight cameras that also act as cctv. They only come in with movement normally but you can turn them on/off with your phone if your expecting someone and program them how long to stay on for.

SistersOfPercy · 17/10/2018 14:17

I'd thought something like this but not quite as bright. Problem I have is every image is a US mansion and not a small, English house so it's hard to tell if it will look a bit stupid.

I got some of these www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B01DNFYAV8/ref=oh_aui_search_detailpage?psc=1&tag=mumsnetforum-21&ie=UTF8

They are ugly, but produce a surprising amount of light even in winter. There is a setting which emits a dim light constantly and full light on a PIR sensor. Had mine a year - not sure how long they'll last, but very easy to install.

diodon · 17/10/2018 15:15

I've got those ones hereward suggested on my gate posts (put there by previous owners so not sure how long they've been going) and they are surprisingly bright.

SistersOfPercy · 17/10/2018 15:17

Worth a look at those for the gateposts then, thank you!
