buying next to a council house

My parents have had their house on the market for 18 months now, getting 3-4.viewings a week. No offers, they have dropped the price from 370000 to 335000. They live in a small village in Hampshire.
There are 4 council houses in their road, they bought in 1980 and have lived
there since it was built in late 60’s. The others are still council.
The village is very sought after and the average price is 750000.
They haven’t even had offers, feedback is it’s too small- average 3 bed semi. with extension on the back, huge kitchen as they knocked through.

No clutter, my mum has hates clutter and is a clean freak, decorated in white throughout, grey modern kitchen. There is a garage and plenty of room to extend, what more can they do?
They need to move to a bungalow and they are around 280000 in the next small town , so can’t afford to take less than 310000. But they haven’t even had any offers.
Is it because it’s joined to a council house, would you buy?

So much for not posting a link!!

Flood risk? Dog smell that everyone else notices?

confusedmummy76 · 14/10/2018 21:50

The ivy on the house would put me right off. I would worry about potential damp caused by it.

Yes but council tenants are more likely to be problematic. Alcoholics, addicts, and other problem tenants aren’t likely to be able to hold down a job and pay a mortgage. If your neighbour is paying a mortgage they’re more likely to work for a living and go to bed quietly on week nights, etc

What a shocking generalisation. I lived in a rented flat in a naice village. Lovely modern flat almost all privately owned.

One neighbour was a drug dealer. The building constantly smelt of cannabis. Police put his door in one day on a warrant.

Across the road were a couple who regularly had domestics in the street & got arrested several times.

3 blocks down in an identical flat was a paedophile.

In contrast I bought an ex council house. My neighbour are council tenants. They're lovely. Houses & gardens are immaculate & nicer, quieter people you couldn't meet.

I was glad I was renting in the 'posh' privately owned street. Meant I could leave quickly.

You can't generalise & tar everyone with the same brush. Just because someone owns a house & have a job doesn't mean they'll take a pride in it or be nice people.

"Dropping the price by much more wouldn’t be possible as they couldn’t afford to buy anything smaller. "

Missed this before. Sorry OP but you cannot sell a house based on the money you need to buy another.

Bestseller · 14/10/2018 21:58

It doesn't matter if its not true redglitter. If even 10% of buyers share that view (or aren't prepared to take the risk that it may be true) it will affect the price

I would think the ivy might be hiding something and wouldn’t give the benefit of the doubt because there are plenty other properties similar so would likely go for one of them. Less hassle !

I like ivy but think this is how I would think if I were buying.

This one sold for less a year ago and prices have gone down since then. Your parents house is over priced.

confusedmummy76 · 14/10/2018 22:03

Where is the link? I'm missing it

calamitycake · 14/10/2018 22:04

Sorry not clear from link. The house I posted is same village and sold for £285,000 last year.

Squirreltamer · 14/10/2018 22:09

That house is the one I mentioned.

No parking, garage or ability to do a side return.

But much more modern inside with a downstairs loo. Kitchen and bathroom look new even if they’re budget ones.

Still say the orginal house is worth more but certainly not the 370k it was originally on for

The link hasn't been posted by the OP. But I think most posters have found the property by googling the image the OP put on. On Chrome you can search for similar images, which finds the property for sale with Woolley & Wallis.
