Larder Cupboard for Boiler - Diagrams included!

I am going through the incredibly frustrating process of piecing together an ikea kitchen with their online planner at the moment and am a bit stuck on how to deal with the boiler. I have 2 lovely pine wardrobe doors 1000mm in width that I want to paint and change the knobs on to make a sort of half larder to cover the boiler.

I started off trying to fit it all into a maximera high cabinet (as per pic) but the carcass has a supporting shelf exactly where the boiler would be.

So I have also tried a base cabinet and then we'll (the royal we) will just build a wardrobe around it. I think this might be the most straightforward solution but maybe there is something else I'm missing... A carcass that isn't part of their metod built in kitchen range? Maybe pax?

Have got an appointment booked for next Saturday to go through my plan in store but not sure what sort of solutions they might be able to come up with so want to prepare as much as possible. All ideas welcome!

My head hurts from staring at their blooming planner so a fresh pair of eyes may help.

Sink side of kitchen with the boiler dilemma on the far left. Should have mentioned I want the toaster and microwave in there too. They are rendered to scale (although the toaster looks like a tiny microwave). Boiler and pipework also boxed in to scale

A good carpenter/builder/kitchen fitter should be able to adapt a unit or make one that would fit the boiler, incorporating IKEA door fronts.

Do you really mean the doors are 1000mm wide?

Although you can but readymade cabinets that are nominally boiler-sized, you can also get cabinets made to order in any size, colour and shape that you desire.

The factories cut the pieces out of laminated boards, edge them, and drill for hinges, screws and dowels, on computer-controlled machines. They are more precise than a person with a saw and drill.

This supplier is a bit costly on delivery charges, but there are others.

Your carpenter or kitchen fitter can probably source or make one. It's easier with self-assembly units as you can cut the pieces before assembling.

You need to start with the doors, and make the cabinets to fit. A boiler cabinet should preferably by 50mm or more wider and deeper than the boiler, to facilitate servicing, unless the cabinet can easily be lifted away. The hinges should be either lift-off or extra-wide opening.

p.s.

I started off trying to fit it all into a maximera high cabinet (as per pic) but the carcass has a supporting shelf exactly where the boiler would be.

There is a Special Tool for removing unwanted shelves from kitchen cabinets (see illustration).

Hi @pigletjohn and thanks for your answer, lotsof good and practical advice there!

Perhaps I am over thinking it all because I've spent so long on the ikea planner the last couple of days!

Yes,the wardrobe doors are a metre wide on total and I think if I go for and 80cm wide base cabinet with drawers I will be able to jig things around with the wardrobe pieces I have to accommodate the boiler, microwave and toaster.

Should probably put a hook for fire blanket in there too 🤔

We built a boiler housing from scratch - we ordered a tongue and groove end panel for the side and a door for the front, and built a simple frame. Not sure if ikea offer tongue and groove to match their doors?

But the the main reason I came on is to tell you that you must check the boiler clearances for safety and maintenance (as stated in the boiler manual) and build this in to your designs. Hopefully you've already done this in your plans!

LittleWingSoul,

IKEA carcases are not supported by shelves. Shelves can be added later after building and fitting carcase at whichever height you need. Also IKEA wall cabinets are 37cm deep so can accommodate many types of combination boilers.
The issue would be 1000mm doors as IKEA carcase in 600 depth only come to 600mm width and 400 depth come to 800mm width.

NotMeNoNo · 17/10/2018 07:25

IME All the ikea cabinets are just plain boxes with a hardboard back and then the shelf/drawers are fitted in to pre drilled rows of holes.
We did exactly that, used a Pax cabinet carcase with our own painted pine 1000 wide doors in a utility room. IIRC the fitter cut the height down slightly to get the right fit and fitted the inside out with custom shelves. It was cheaper than buying the materials separately.

The very tall carcasses have a supporting shelf in the middle, I know this from building 3 Billy bookcases! And the kitchen high cab I've been looking at has a supporting non-removable shelf near the middle, it would seem. Nothing that can't be worked around I suppose!

@notmenono I will have another look at pax carcasses... Couldn't find quite the right dimensions needed. Would you mind sending me a pic of what you did in the utility room? And what you had as a combination inside? Although I appreciate if it's not housing a boiler it may be irrelevant!
