Tiling - is this finish right? With photo

First housing project for us and we have just had a professional tiler in.

But the edges at the top of the kitchen tiling and the edges don't have the stainless steel trim on them. Is this right? It looks kind of unfinished to me. The window sill/cill has the trim on we requested.

We haven't decorated yet but it looks a bit rough round the edges to me. What is usual? Feel a bit disappointed tbh so I need some guidance on how it normally looks in case I'm overreacting. The tiler has gone by the way, so I can't ask him in person.

We have never had a finish on the top of our tiles and we have them in 4 of our rooms. Looks fine and yours do too.

Ellapaella · 11/10/2018 15:09

I don't think it looks very neat around the edges.

Fantasisa · 11/10/2018 15:09

Phew. That is the kind of thing I need to hear, thanks.

I know, me too. DH thinks one we decorate it will be fine, but I think it looks unfinished.

If you want a tile trim added can't you just ask the tiler to come back and add one?

Fairylea · 11/10/2018 15:17

We’ve done a lot of renovations and the only time the tiles have been edged was in a bathroom where the edge went up and round a window as well so otherwise it would have looked odd.

Canyerjustfixthis · 11/10/2018 15:18

Trim would've finished it off better, unless the tile edges are glazed? I'd definitely have had them on top.

ShatnersBassoon · 11/10/2018 15:19

That looks neat to me, just normal. Unless you asked him to put a trim on the edges, he'd assume you didn't want one.

Fantasisa · 11/10/2018 15:23

We didn't specify where we wanted a trim. We were asked what kind of trim we wanted and left him to it to go to work.

I might ask him to come back, but I didn't know if it could be added now or not or if I was expecting the finish to be something it shouldn't be!

Looks good. Trim looks a bit old fashioned to me, although it is necessary in some places like window/sills etc

ems137 · 11/10/2018 15:41

I've only ever seen tiles with a trim. Surely it's a rough edge otherwise? I can't fully see from your picture but it looks like the tile cement is visible too?

dementedpixie · 11/10/2018 15:45

My kitchen and bathroom tiles have trim. Looks unfinished without it

tumericmasala · 11/10/2018 15:55

I think you need a trim

Ellapaella · 11/10/2018 15:55

I would get a trim OP - it looks a bit messy and unfinished without.

Joinourclub · 11/10/2018 16:03

I think it might look better with a trim on the exposed cut vertical edges. If you’ve got white grout then I’d go for a white trim. Alternatively you could paint the vertical edge when you paint the walls? I don’t think you need trim along the top.

Fantasisa · 11/10/2018 16:04

Can a trim just be added now? It doesn't go under the tiles in someway?

OP posts:
Canyerjustfixthis · 11/10/2018 16:05

If he used fast setting adhesive then there's not much chance of adding trim without sacrificing the top row of tiles but if he used slow set or tubbed adhesive it could be possible if he comes back within a couple of days of finishing.

Fantasisa · 11/10/2018 16:09

Fast setting I think, it was all done today.

OP posts:
Canyerjustfixthis · 11/10/2018 16:13

Doesn't necessarily mean it's fast setting if done in a day, walls don't need fast set the same way as floors do - if you really wanted them it's worth a phonecall to find out to be sure?

Fantasisa · 11/10/2018 16:15

Just asked DH to, I'm back at work pretending not to Mumsnet. Fingers crossed.

Chances are if there's a lot of cut tiles in a smallish area the tiler used slow set as it's a pain having to mix small amounts cos of the delays while cutting and levelling etc.

KitchenGuy · 12/10/2018 00:01

Personally I don't like to fit trim unless absolutely necessary. I think it looks much neater if the ends are just carefully filled and painted the same colour as the walls and I know many other firms who think the same. Just decorate, you won't regret it.
