Open plan kitchen - dangerous and how to sort?

A couple of years ago we bought our house. The previous owners had removed the wall that separated the hallway and stairs from the kitchen, making it open plan. However, whilst I didn’t give it much thought back then, now we have DC in the house I have concerns that this is a major fire hazard. The benefit of it being open plan is that we can fit a bigger table in, but I can’t shake off the worry that if a fire started in the kitchen, nothing would separate it from the stairs and the front door. Which is obviously far more important than fitting a big table in! My feeling is that we should have a wall put back up with a proper fire door installed; does anyone have any advice on what this might cost, roughly? We’re in the East Midlands. Thanks in advance for any help.

Personally I think you're overthinking it. Just make sure you have a good fire alarm system.

I would put a wired smoke alarm and it it is that concerning to you a home sprinkler system could be a possibility. I have had to re insert wall as disabled child and open plan didn’t work but just stud walls and normal doors.

Were the changes signed off by building regs? I thought you had to have enhanced alarms and sprinklers etc to get permission for the main staircase to go through the kitchen?

You could reinstate the wall using fire resistant plasterboard.
