Do you need to tile the lower part of the 3 walls around loo for hygiene/cleaning?

Just doing cloakroom - should I tile/ or is washable/vinyl paint good enough for hygiene and cleaning?

Never had it tiled in any house where it's a separate loo, wash down with hot soapy water once a week when cleaning the rest of the loo/bathroom. We do have washable bathroom paint on the walls and the walls not up close to the loo.

My downstairs loo wall is manky - it's painted but I don't think with washable /bathroom paint.

Price up tiling , price up washable paint (it is more £)

I have a teenage DS so the wall most likely suffered through his younger years.
I need to repaint it but I reckon it'll take sugar soap to shift the discolouration. (I've tried a steamer and detergent but I think it'll need more )

The toilet ds and his friends use has a wall close to the loo on one side and is stained/needs repainting. I don't think grout around tiles would fair much better so it is down to personal preference. Wet wall would be an idea if you don't mind the caravan look.

Bloody hell -- never thought ahead to the grout discolouring !! What is wet wall?

Grey grout. Same as a floor.

Depends on how many boys/men there are in your house and how good their aim is!

Dickybow321 · 07/10/2018 16:20

Urrgh, boys are gross Grin

Yes , I have grey grout on the floor in our downstairs loo Grin

Good quality vinyl or washable paint - no problems. I actually found it worse to keep grout clean in an all around tiled bathroom I had once. Washable paint repels liquids and literally needs a quick wipe down.

We don't have tiles around the toilet in the cloakroom. I am shocked that walls need repainting because of men - I would make them clean it and repaint it.

In general I don't like tiles and have as few as possible in our bathrooms. They date quickly and are a pain to remove / redo whereas it's easy to just paint a wall if you want a new colour scheme and grout gets dirty. We need to get our ensuite done and the biggest cost will probably be to remove all the bloody tiles, plaster the wall and put more up. Why the previous owners thought it was ok to do wall to ceiling tiles I don't know but I imagine the labour costs will be twice the cost of the furniture.

We have the paint that you can just wipe off. It costs more than the usual paint but is well worth the bit extra

redsummershoes · 08/10/2018 13:08

yes. looks better and us much easier to keep clean.

SpoonBlender · 08/10/2018 13:11

I'd always tile. We tiled up to waist level all round when we redid the bathroom, and DP's a sitter. It's just sensible in a bathroom, even if you don't have a pee fountain in the family all that shower condensation doesn't do paint any good.
