Shower room for kids and teenagers.

We’re getting the loft converted to two bedrooms and a shower room for the kids (boy and girl) , thinking ahead to tween and teen years and is there anything I should be thinking about for the shower room?

Cleanliness, privacy etc I’m finding hard to think what’s best for them vs what I’d like in a shower room so I was hoping some parents of older kids might have some tips.

Lots of storage space for all their bits and pieces. I have 2 grown DDs who seem to collect loads of makeup/nail polish/shower stuff etc. Good heated towel rails for hanging and drying towels. A light above the mirror for optimal makeup application.

Oh and the biggest shower stall you can get in. They appear to like space!

Definitely lots of space for towels. Where are they both going to hang their bath towels to dry? A standard bathroom radiator normally only fits one unfolded towel. Then I like an extra rail/hook for a hand towel near the basin.
Recesses in the shower cubicle are good if you can have them, I've never found a shower caddy that stays put or doesn't get rusty.

Ah yes. Hooks on the back of the doors for hanging dressing gowns and clothes. Recessed in the shower are a great idea. They get less gunky than the wire ones.

Thank you all, really helpful things to think about.

A good lock on the door!

A light activated or moisture activated extractor fan, so the bathroom doesn't go mouldy

Removable shower head on a slide rail in case they turn out different heights, and for easy cleaning

Flooring that is watertight (ie not wood) and won't stain

Maybe two mirrors, if you have space

Shaver socket (also for recharging electric toothbrushes)

Consider mermaid board or similar in the shower to avoid manky grout

Re towel rails, I like the ones with wide spaced rails (eg JIS Pevensey) as you can get more towels on. They may not be enough to heat the room though so would need you to include a small radiator or UFH.

Make sure that if you're having a fancy rainfall shower head, that you add a flexible hose shower head as well. (If for nothing else other than for cleaning)
We rented a house that didn't have a flexible one & omg that bathroom was a pain to clean....
We have a timed switch for the light in my DDs shower room. Goes off after 20mins, when she invariably leaves it on. (You can set it longer/shorter)

Easy to clean. I'm continually amazed how the kids can get fucking toothpaste everywhere in their bathroom - you're meant to be brushing your teeth with it, not plastering the fucking walls.

Make it as easy as possible to return towels to the correct position - they'll still abandon them on the bedroom floor but small steps and all that.

Storage, storage, storage!

Wall hanging toilet and sink. Makes a small room feel bigger and easier to clean.

Minimise and dust traps or hard to clean bits.

Decent storage.

Secondary light source (low level motion activated led strip?) so that at night they don’t hge to turn the main light (and fan) on.

Most powerful and quietest fan you can get.

Multiple shaver sockets for shaver & toothbrushes. They always seem to run out at the same time!

Brilliant, thanks! I’m dreading having two bathrooms to clean, will absolutely have to train them both up quickly (hopefully)!
