Pimping my shed

I’ve ordered this shed from B&Q:

www.diy.com/departments/6x4-forest-reverse-apex-overlap-wooden-shed/1292892_BQ.prd

It’s due to arrive on Friday and I need to make it suitable to house two rabbits (separately).

I’m putting this in the DIY section as it is some practical points re materials etc that I’m after.

I read somewhere that it’s a good idea to like the inside of the shed with MDF to make it warmer. Where is a cheap place to get MSF? Can you think of any cheaper alternatives.

Similarly I need to put in “shelves” or floors for the rabbits. Maybe 2 or 3. And also divide down the middle somehow, with at least one level preferably having some sort of grid or small bars between the rabbits so they can see each other.

Any general advice on how to keep a shed warm in winter welcome also

Please don’t just tell me it’s a sh*t shed’

Thank you 🙂

First thing to do is sketch out what you actually want. 2 or 3? Divide somehow? Get that nailed down. Don't be afraid to consider stacking pre-bought large hutches, it's a lot easier than constructing your own.

Get advice (or pointers to someone else's advice) from your vet, I know nothing about rabbits and they may have specific needs when packed together.

You'll need insulation for the winter. You can buy foam slab (B&Q, wickes, whatever - go look at the 'large slabs of ply and MDF and foam' aisle) and line the inside walls and ceiling, as a first run. MDF inside won't then be required.

A sealed tube electric heater with thermostat would be your heat source of preference, www.ebay.co.uk/bhp/tube-heater

Thanks @SpoonBlender!

The shed arrives on Friday so I’m hoping can put it up and then have a better idea of how many levels etc.

My concern with hearing was there is no power in the shed. Will have a proper look at the link you sent as I couldn’t tell whether it was mains operated or not

I’ve also read heated blankets are not a great idea so hoping they’ll be ok if we insulate the shed properly. It’s better than a hutch which is what a lot of rabbits live in and they are quite exposed and open!

Insulation does not warm a shed. It just means that whatever heat you provide escapes more slowly.

If the shed is close to the house and you can provide a safe electrical supply, an oil-filled radiator with its own thermostat will provide a gentle and safe warmth.

Any heater with a flame in it will be a fire risk, and will increase damp and fumes in the shed, which may be dangerous to the animals.

Provide them with plenty of warm bedding and sleeping shelters.

...I had visions of you painting your shed Barbie pink with glitter...

@PigletJohn thank you

@MrsMoastyToasty I could do that too! 😆
