One of the pillar taps in the bathroom sink has suddenly become very very loose .As if it was once cemented /grouted in and now it isn't .

I've no idea who to contact to fix it - do I need a plumber ?

I've told family not to use it .I'm rather panicky about potential water leaks ,hope this won't be one .

Can anyone help or reassure me ?

I would be very surprised if it was cemented in. Most likely the retaining nut underneath has come loose and there just happens to be some grout left around the base. It's an awkward job but doesn't take too long. It's usually work for a plumber but any handyman with the right tool should be able to handle it. It's unlikely to leak unless manhandled but I would suggest not using it in the meantime as you can loosen the fittings underneath if you keep moving the tap and it is not secure.
