Estate agents: what qualifications do you have, I only have GCSEs?

Maya331 · 01/10/2018 00:40

I want to become an estate agent and have only 9 GCSEs, mainly Bs and Cs and only one being an A.

I know there are no formal qualifications required to become an estate agent but I'm just worried that there will be people out there who are at an advantage because have degrees in real estate etc.

I'm also thinking of doing the Level 3 CPD Certified Estate Agent Diploma - I guess this would help and I think it can be done online.

How qualified are you guys? 😁

You don't need any qualifications, genuinely. Just get applying.

KarlDilkington · 01/10/2018 00:52

P.s I'm assuming you mean general high street offices.

serbska · 01/10/2018 02:22

It’s. Why low pay with commission on top. Might not be the best time to be going into being an estate agent, londom transaction numbers are very down and would expect that to ‘ripple out’.

serbska · 01/10/2018 02:23

*its very low

April2020mom · 01/10/2018 06:55

Just do it. It’s like working in a travel agent. Are you talking about the high street companies or not? Please elaborate further. I want to have more information.

Maya331 · 01/10/2018 12:46

Yeah I'm just thinking about high street companies like Taylor and Wood and Ryder&Dutton etc.

My guess is they will want previous sales experience. You might be better off learning the ropes with a small independent as it may be less cut-throat in terms of make your sales targets or you're out.

I applied for an agency (didn't realise at the time that it was solely for estate agency and only realised when I went for the interview) luckily, I blagged it completely and they put me on their books. I had one telephone interview which didn't go any further, and one face to face interview which I then got!
I had GCSE's and a BTEC in performing arts.
Just try to genuine about it. They appreciate people who are really willing to learn..
Also, before any interviews, research the company- they may ask questions about themselves to see if you've done your homework... Good Luck! Xx

Why do you want to be an estate agent?

Most people in property tend to fall into it! Market isn't great in some areas that's true but you can protect yourself by looking at other areas of property. You can apply for apprenticeships these days to become a surveyor, it's not just valuers and building consultants there is so much you can do.

I'm in property management and love it as no day is the same and money is really good for a basic wage and there is no risk with commission. Have a look at RICS and to get better idea of salaries have a look here www.deverellsmith.com/property-salary-report/2018-19/

Maya331 · 01/10/2018 23:10

Thanks, what do you mean by solely for estate agency, did you want to do lettings or something instead of sales - or is that a daft question haha
How did you blag it and what company do you work for? Xx

Bunbunbunny - I'm just thinking of being an estate agent because I don't know what else to be tbh, don't know if I'm cover enough to be a surveyor but I'll have a look haha, thanks for your help

Wow fudge - what sort of jobs would give me sales experience, don't suppose being a sales assistant helps bahahaha

Most will want a proven track record of sales.
The pay is often VERY low with commission on top, which is worth considering if you will need to apply for a mortgage or a rental property
Most estate agents will want someone with a full clean drivers licence.
You will be expected to work weekends
It is a very target driven environment

AnalyticalChick · 02/10/2018 18:52

High street estate agents are doing badly because sales volumes are down, and more and more sellers are doing it online for a fraction of the price. Why not apply to work at one of the online estate agents, since they are the future?

bilbodog · 02/10/2018 19:58

Any job you may have had dealing with the general public would be a plus so shop work would count positively. I got into estate agency by working saturdays - they always need part timers to help out so the full time staff can have some time off so this can be a way in. You dont need specific qualifications but you could do some on the job training if you became full time. Where i am in the home counties they always seem to be looking for lettings staff - seems to be a high turnover in lettings more than sales. Its not well paid - particularly at the beginning and the market is crap at the moment. You might find it hard to get in until the market picks up.

Try also new build sales person with all the national housebuilders. Most are always looking for staff and trainees .
