Does asbestos get missed in renovation projects? How likely is this?

A house we regularly go to has been fully renovated in recent years. It is a 60s house with an integral garage. I worry about asbestos and have recently read that integral garages of this age normally have asbestos ceilings. The ceiling of garage of this house was completely removed in renovation project and fire safe boards fitted in line with current building regs. Owner of properly when I asked said that the previous ceiling had just been plasterboard. I worry in case it was actually asbestos insulation board. However a lot of people were involved in the renovation so how likely is it that an asbestos ceiling would have been missed by:

Owner
Surveyor when the house was bought
Architect when planning changes to house
Building firm used (reputable) and any contractors
Skip hire company taking away skip full of old stuff
Passers by
Building regulation officer

I am a worrier on this subject by the way as a disclaimer.

It’s just a house you go to? You aren’t thinking of buying it or getting your drill or and start drilling into things?

The issue is all in your head here. Why are you even worrying about it????

Our garage has an asbestos roof, so does my parents. Unless asbestos is damaged and fraying it’s not an issue. Not sure why you’re concerned tbh

Wouldthishappen · 28/09/2018 09:25

Maybe it wasn't clear. The ceiling is no longer there - it has been changed. However it was dealt with as if plasterboard. Not removed as asbestos. No one suspected it to be asbestos, they suspected it to be plasterboard.

However I have read that integral garages in 60s/70s houses are likely to have asbestos ceilings hence asking if there is any likely hood that all the people involved could have been wrong/missed it.

Obviously the concern with asbestos is if it is smashed up/drilled/broken in anyway which it would have been in the renovation process

But it isn't there now? So no risk to you whilst visiting?

if there is any likely hood that all the people involved could have been wrong/missed it

possible but unlikely

Firstly, they would have noticed.

Secondly, the affect on you regardless would be zero.

You know you are being completely irrational. Try not to give it another thought.

wowfudge · 28/09/2018 10:09

Is this your PIL's house? I think it extremely unlikely that all those people didn't spot asbestos if it was there. Building control would be hot on things like that and the people removing it are at more risk than the residents of the house because they would be breaking it up and potentially breathing in dust. Builders tend to know what to look for from experience.

I think you are worrying unnecessarily and unhealthily.

Wouldthishappen · 28/09/2018 10:10

It is a house we stay at regularly and would have been around at the time of the renovations so would have affected us.

Is it your PILs house?

wowfudge · 29/09/2018 10:49

You’re catastrophising OP. Is somebody ill and you think it might be connected? If so then mention it and at least it can be considered.

wowfudge · 29/09/2018 10:50

You have to breathe in asbestos fibres and they have stick in your lungs to be harmful.

NotDavidTennant · 29/09/2018 10:56

What is it that you are specifically worried about? That you were exposed to asbestos in the past? Or that you are continuing to be exposed to asbestos now?

House4 · 29/09/2018 10:57

It absolutely would not have been missed.
Stop worrying.

LIZS · 29/09/2018 11:03

Very unlikely. Do you routinely go inside the garage of someone else's house anyway?

Chickencellar · 29/09/2018 12:08

It may have been smashed up or not , it may have been aib or not , either way there is nothing you can do now. Nobody on here can tell you otherwise.

Sugarpiehoneyeye · 29/09/2018 19:42

I hear you OP. It would be very unprofessional for the Surveyor to have missed it, also extremely dangerous, for all concerned.
Asbestos isn't taken lightly, and can't be moved, by just anybody, it's also a very expensive job.
Sounds like it really was plasterboard to me.

Chickencellar · 01/10/2018 12:09

Depends what type of asbestos it is , then yes it can be moved by anybody.
