Open plan living

If you have an open plan kitchen/living area but no separate utility room, what do you do when the washing machine or dishwasher is on - do you just suffer the noise, or do you only put them on when you go out? Thanks!

I did have just one open plan living space for a while. Dishwasher put on whenever as it wasn't THAT noisy.

Washing machine was usually only put on when we went out for work in the morning. I know lots of people hate that for fire risk. Or would put it on before doing something noisy anyway like cooking.

My dishwasher is lovely and quiet, so doesn't disturb us.
I put the washing machine on timer to coincide with my alarm, so it generally finishes by the time I've showered , dressed, faffed around with DC's breakfast etc. Just enough time to hang it out before school/work.

We have a utility, but even so, the washing machine is very noisy, so DH does what Gazelda says. Plus if you're on economy 7 - or whatever it's called these days - you can get cheap rate. (But maybe washing machines don't take a lot of electricity.)

I don't find it especially noisy to be honest.

We're not full open plan - just no doors on the hallway, kitchen and lounge. The dishwasher quietly churns away, and the washer is only noisy for 5m on spin.

If you own it is worth investing in lovely quiet appliances

Thank all! :)

We have a dishwasher in the main living space and even though it's quiet you can still hear it. We therefore pit it on before we go to bed. We have a utility room for the washer and dryer, I think you would really struggle to watch tv/ relax having dinner if the washing machine or dryer was on. In our case, they're on every day and wouldn't consider leaving the dryer on whilst we went to bed or left the house. It's worth considering how you'd do it. Maybe consider a utility cupboard - like a big double cupboard - they're all over Pinterest etc so that there is some thing to lessen the noise.

I have open plan. Fridge is integrated which cuts down some noise. Dishwasher is noisy so I run it as we’re going to bed.

I put washing machine on when we are out - so there’s a load ready for me to put out by the time I come home every day.

Just suffer the noise.

I hate open plan living!.Really don't get why it's so popular.

Not open plan, but kitchen is next to living room. Got a miele washing machine and Bosch dishwasher and both are so much quieter than indensit and Hotpoint ones. Newer better machines are quieter.
