Fireplace in kitchen

Seems like knocking the fireplace is a bigger job than originally thought, so rethinking it.
Could do something like this, but maybe there’s other options ?
Any ideas ?

Knocking the chimney breast down I mean

Like an actual stove??

The house is old and traditional, but the kitchen is the one room which is going to be modern and contemporary

Don’t know what on earth to do!

Put a range cooker in there?

Iamagreyhoundhearmeroar · 21/09/2018 10:50

Your floor is gorgeous, btw

I would think twice about making the kitchen too different from the rest of the house in terms of character.

Ours has been really nicely blended throughout rather than jarring modern and traditional break. Spotlights and coving, old fireplace etc.

We have a lovely range in the brick chimney breast in the kitchen - quite like the second image here, but more up to date door handles/fronts:

If you don't care about resale, crack on, of course, I just think ultra modern ktichens in otherwise traditional kitchens are jarring.

The whole kitchen has already been designed so I wasn’t thinking range cooker. It would have been the perfect place though.

The new kitchen isn’t too modern, it’s not white gloss. It’s hand painted wood. Not ultra modern lights

But like this

I’m just not sure whether to go for a modern or traditional log burner

I’m thinking traditional

You could just put does on it and use it for storage or put in bookshelves and use it fir cookbooks.

Belindabelle · 21/09/2018 13:31

Is the kitchen going to be fitted along that wall or does the kitchen go at the opposite side of the room? Can you post a floorpan of the room.

Tomboytown · 21/09/2018 17:20

No
The kitchen is going on the opposite side
With an island down the middle

The idea was to knock down the chimney breast and gain 500cm.

It’s down this end, opposite the fridge

How has your whole kitchen “already been designed” without taking an entire wall (complete with chimney breast) into account?!
I’d respectfully suggest you go back to the drawing board.

Tomboytown · 21/09/2018 21:43

Because the new kitchen doesn’t interfere with that wall at all.
As I said, the chimney breast was supposed to come down to make that wall flush, and I could still do that, it’s just more work than originally thought, so I am considering making a feature of the chimney breast.
There’s a couple of things I could change around with the new kitchen, positioning of the island e.g. but we’ve worked on a plan that I’m completely happy with and I don’t want to change that layout.

Don't knock it down without checking with a builder. I bought a house where the previous owner had done this. Heaven knows why as it was a big kitchen anyway. It turned out that the chimney Breast above was resting on a piece of pine. The builder wouldn't go near it until scaffolding was erected under it. I had stood there before. We re. - built it and put a lovely oak beam in and an electric wood burner style stove in.

Bowerbird5 · 21/09/2018 23:25

Don't know how much you want to spend but we have just ordered an Everhot.

Tomboytown · 22/09/2018 08:20

Got builders and structural engineer don’t worry!
That everhot looks fantastic

I would keep it and put a stove in.

Joinourclub · 22/09/2018 10:52

I would also keep it , with a wood burner and some lovely tiles. Some great examples on Pinterest. I plan on doing the same in the future. My fireplace is currently housing a dolls house!

Tomboytown · 22/09/2018 11:39

Chimney co. Coming tomorrow to see if it’s usable

Chimney is fine, just needs a liner.

Bad news is other fireplace I wanted to use in living room is completely fake!
