Kitchen flooring- karndean/wood

This is the look I’m going for.
What’s the advantages of karndean?
I have nice wood through the rest of the house and don’t want this to look plasticky.
I have so much to organise and if I could just make a decision about the floor it would help soooo much!
Alternatively I could just get a straight wood

Straight wood like this, but lighter

In a kitchen I'd go karndean 100%. Waterproof, hard wearing, softer if you drop things on it. If you go for the higher end stuff it doesn't have the plasticy sheen. Pricey though!

Karndean. Indistinguishable from wood - be selective on the design. Mop and forget.

chewbacca83 · 20/09/2018 15:49

I'm going to get the same in my new kitchen. It looks lovely!

My parents have Karndean, I have engineered oak. Being honest, from a practical point of view, Karndean is great, my patents love it. Just wipe it and forget. We're not overly careful with the engineered wood but I do clean up spills etc, don't wear shoes etc. But for everyone saying you can't tell it's lino rather than wood, I think you can. That will be especially true if you have wood everywhere else. Personally if you've spent money on a lovely kitchen like the photos, I think Karndean would cheapen the look. Only my view though.

Yes I’m another who chose engineered wood over Karndean. I think you can tell the difference and personally prefer the look and feel of wood.

We have to be a little more careful with it but it is holding up fine so far.

The thing is, yes of course it's vinyl flooring, it's not hard like wood, but it's far more practical and hygienic in a kitchen. A wood floor is like a wood worktop, you have to look after it and a big risk of water stains. Nothing stopping you of course if the look of it is more important.

The herringbone is lovely. If you're going to do that and make a feature of the floor, you might want to get the real deal.

Karndean is really hard-wearing and stands up well to regular wetting. But it's fake, and expensive for fake, and I do think you can tell it's plastic. We have karndean and will probably get it next time too. I just don't want to deal with spag bol, cat poo, or dropped bowls of cereal on anything I have to be remotely careful with.

I’m leaning towards wood
I had wood in my last kitchen, no problems

I am looking at lino or marmoleum because they are natural.

ilovewinterpansies · 21/09/2018 19:35

I have engineered wood floors and have just had it varnished. Spills clean up really well and it's easy to clean. It used to be oiled and it was a total disaster - so porous - basically like walking on a sponge.

Have had them painted with a white wash before the varnish and they look amazing but wow a light floor does show every speck of dirt!!! No regrets though as I love the fresh look.

mum2015 · 21/09/2018 19:52

What about laminate like quickstep

LuluJakey1 · 21/09/2018 21:36

We have polished floorboards and rugs everwhere else downstairs but have Karndean parquet in the kitchen/family room. It's great. Softer and more forgiving than wood. Easily cleaned. Waterproof. It has a surface that looks like wood.
If it gets damaged-like when DH managed to get a nail stuck under the door and dragged it back and forards and ripped a huge scratch in two piecesof parguet- they just came out and replaced the two parquet tiles. Didn't charge us. Took 15 minutes. No faff.

I would look at lino/marmoleum as another poster said, natural materials I do think Karndean flooring can look a bit fake, perhaps less so with the tiled effect.
