What would you include if you were designing your own house?

If you were designing you own house from scratch, what things would you include, either to make life easier or as a little luxury?

Walk in pantry? Two sinks in the en suite? Laundry room? Would love to hear some ideas.

Definitely a utility room. With enough space to iron and hang up as I go along. But then again if I had the money to design and live in my own home I would have enough to hire someone to do the ironing for me............
(Wonders off in wishful thinking)

buckingfrolicks · 18/09/2018 09:14

what would you include?

Tomboytown · 18/09/2018 09:16

Wherever your bins are, design the back/side door door close by, so you don’t have to trail them through the house to get them out.
Light switches in all the right places.
Outdoor lights on a timer

Bedroom-dressing room-bathroom, all in one.

Tawdrylocalbrouhaha · 18/09/2018 09:17

A secret room with a fireplace and lots of bookshelves, and a concealed door nobody else could find. And a sash window opening into a lovely tree.

Tomboytown · 18/09/2018 09:18

Utility with space to dry things, there’s stuff that I don’t put in the dryer, so want to gang them

lljkk · 18/09/2018 09:19

ooh... love this fantasy!

Walk in wardrobes in 2 largest bedrooms.
Built-alcove space for wardrobes in 2 smaller bedrooms.
Central full bathroom off landing, though (hate en suite).
Downstairs shower but separate toilet room.

Reach in pantry but not walk in pantry. I'm not much of a caterer and big pantries tend to be cluttered with forgotten food.

At least one more storage cupboard/closet.

Loft space for storage or more closet space.

Office room & a utility room downstairs.

Not open plan downstairs (too noisy).

Lots of light, at least one open fire (or stove).

Huge door garage!

One way to do things is have bedrooms downstairs & living space upstairs to enjoy views.

A wet room could be nice, or design utility room to also work well for dealing with wet/muddy things.

Airing cupboard. omg, love mine.

What would you include if you were designing your own house?
Sarahlou63 · 18/09/2018 09:19

Lucky enough to have a walk in pantry and big utility/dog/boot room - both are fab. I'd have a centralised vacuum system and underfloor heating.

AmabelleOnabike · 18/09/2018 09:20

Lots of storage (bigger storage areas than bedrooms).
A laundry room big enough to comfortable cope with all aspects of laundry so dirty clothes go in and clean, ironed clothes come out (so, some laundry fairies too to do all that work)
Heated towel rails in all bathrooms that run off the hot water so even during the summer and heating-off times towels will dry.
Utility areas for dogs and recycling and wellies, etc.
Stoves backing up against an internal wall so the wall acts as a storage heater after the stove has been burning.
A heated towel rail in a cupboard in the laundry room for drying clothes.
A sheltered patio (even if that is where there is no view) so you can sit out even when the wind is blowing
A whole host of house elves.

sdaisy26 · 18/09/2018 09:20

Definitely big utility with drying space. Boot room. Plenty of sockets, usb ones in strategic places and logical light switches (and at all entry / exit points to rooms eg we can turn our landing light on from the hall but not the hall off from the landing, really irritates me).

Well proportioned rooms and high ceilings.

DonnaDarko · 18/09/2018 09:22

Utility room
Walk in closet
Cinema room complete with proper popcorn and tango blast machines!

Shmithecat · 18/09/2018 09:23

Upstairs laundry room and downstairs utility room. I had an upstairs laundry room until the end of last year and I miss it.

Boiling water tap.

Separate dressing room
And YY to pp who said not open plan. I hate it. But I still would want a kitchen big enough to dine and and have a sofa or two in. Plus another couple of snugs/reception rooms that would be kept cat/child/toy free!

Don't care for ensuites as such but they're needs to be 2 bathrooms and a downstairs toilet.

Momzilla82 · 18/09/2018 09:26

A laundry chute from the bathroom directly into a basket downstairs in the utility. A dumb waiter going in the opposite direction to send the clean washing upstairs rather than it sitting on a chair for eighteen bazillion years. A maid in the utility room to wash and iron everything.

I once saw someone who had a sliding glass window near their kitchen sink, and a bar outside - so pots and stuff after parties in the garden quickly ended up inside and it formed a sort of serving hatch.

wowfudge · 18/09/2018 09:27

A sunny balcony off the master bedroom for coffee in the morning. I might look at putting in a butler's pantry so I can brew said coffee without going downstairs.

lljkk · 18/09/2018 09:32

Would a laundry chute get dirty but can't be cleaned?
Do boiling water taps have problems with hard water deposits?
Cupboard above the stairs (that often empty big space).

Conservatory could be lovely.

Dubz227 · 18/09/2018 09:46

Omg definitely lots of storage space. Master bedroom with walk in wardrobe as well as his and hers sinks. I would love to be able to do this. I do daydream about things like this.
Large kitchen with an island and stools. I would love to sit around and entertain friends for a coffee/drinks. French doors leading out from kitchen onto a patio or decking. Separate dining room. Separate kids lounge/dayroom downstairs with their own toilet (en suite) so they would stay put for longer. Wouldn't mind family lounge being smaller if I had a larger kitchen and separate dining area and kids room. I would need at least an acre of land to design my dream house!!! I would want a open plan home where you could walk through the downstairs without walking in/out of doors. Like arched passageways that's separate the rooms from each other with an exception for the kids room which I would want a door on 😂😂😂
So able to walk through the house, dining area, lounge kitchen semi open plan. With kitchen being the main hub of the home.

winterwonderly · 18/09/2018 09:56

Oh I love some of these ideas. I think the biggest thing for me would be decent storage (for everything.....towels, bedding, clothes, coats, shoes, food etc).

A utility/laundry room that's big enough to have a heated airier up in it a lot of the time.

Open plan kitchen/dining/living but designed in a sort of L shape so you can't see the kitchen area when sitting in the living area.

Double height utility room with ceiling drying space, dehumidifier and laundry shute from bathroom.

Underfloor heating everywhere so no radiators, meaning shelves or cupboards on any wall without windows or furniture against it.

All double glazed windows with integral blinds.

Proper stairs into the loft (or extremely easy to use, wide loft ladder)

Enough plug sockets without every bloody one needing a double plug or 4 way adaptor.

I once met someone who had a colour palette designed for their house Hmm which sounded terribly awful until they talked about how each room complemented another and if you looked from one room to another it all blended. They said this sitting on my sofa and pointed out they could see a view to the back of the house which went from a room of red and green to hall of peach and plum to room of yellow to room of sage green (none of which I had painted) and it began to sound like a good idea.

lexer · 18/09/2018 12:28

Utility room with a hanging facility so that clothes can dry or drip dry (we have that and I am so glad). Definitely NOT two sinks in the en suite. What a waste of space.

We don't have a large house but I so appreciate the utility room with hanging space. I see other similar conversions without one and I wonder where they hang their washing in winter etc.

wonkylegs · 18/09/2018 12:45

Utility room and separate boot room with space to dump stuff and close the door - big enough to store all the needed cleaning stuff.
Multiple bathrooms but no ensuite.
Lots of easily accessible storage
Sewing room
Home office
Library
Big hallways with space for shelves

Well proportioned rooms, high ceilings, big windows, lots of light, fireplaces
Really good lighting
Well thought out Kitchen with a pantry
Playroom
Wine cellar

I'm an architect and may have thought about this once or twice .... now just need some money to realise those dreams to be fair our current house is working towards as much of this as possible.

Justabouthadituptohere · 18/09/2018 12:51

Storage
Walk in shower
Boot room
Large utility room
Possibly a smaller second kitchen
A bright and large study
Under floor heating
Air filters
USB points
BOSE speaker system - integrated electric/WiFi systems
Wall mounted fellows
High ceilings
Blackout blinds
High spec windows
3-4 bathrooms
Downstairs loo and separate shower room

Some of above i have

Lots and lots of storage for suitcases and large items

Garden - large patio - paths for kids to ride bikes etc - grass - outdoor pizza oven.

The list goes on and on!

WTFsMyUserName · 18/09/2018 13:03

In addition to the open plan kitchen/dining room, fully kitted out with Sub Zero Wolf and Smallbones of Devizes, I would have a smaller, basic kitchen tucked away somewhere (comprising a sink, a cooker and extracter and some fitted cupboards), to do my 'smelly' cooking like pan fried fish, grilling, frying, spicy dishes. Main kitchen/diner and all the appliances/furnishings won't get so sticky and smelly.

sickmumma · 18/09/2018 13:18

Large big windows, mezzanine level with some kind of reading snug, big bedrooms with lots of light, large utility room with room to dry and store all my un put away washing and a dog washing station! A big garden with A swimming pool for me (heated and covered over winter, saunas for DH, a football pitch and tennis court for the DS's and a big Wendy house for DD! Easy storage for bikes and a covered parking for the cars. Nice quite road where the kids could play out! As you can tell I haven't thought on this much.....

ginghamstarfish · 18/09/2018 16:08

Proper laundry/utility room with sink, leading to glassed sunroom type area for drying etc. Loads of storage. A veranda downstairs, balcony/terrace upstairs from the bedroom or landing. Pantry.

2cats2many · 18/09/2018 16:11

A walk in pantry and a utility big enough to have a clothes horse. Ensuites for the master and guest bedrooms. A balcony off.the master bedroom too.

Oh bloody loads really and almost the opposite of.the house that I love in now!

Disfordarkchocolate · 18/09/2018 16:12

Upstairs laundry room next to the family bathroom, room for hanging clothes to try and plenty of storage. Nice big downstairs utility, walk in pantry, plenty of storage, underfloor heating and space for a few Christmas trees. Just for me there would be a reading room, preferably at the top of a tower so it had a lovely view. The room would have space for a day bed and a little fire.
