Cost of new windows

I'm in the process of gathering quotes for new windows, and the first one has come in at over £5,000 for 5 windows - a bay consisting of 3 windows and 2 upstairs. The quote is for double glazed Upvc and much the same figure for casement or sash. We are in London. Does this sound reasonable, as it is quite a bit higher than I expected?

2500 to 3000.
Was the quote from a national company?

WittgensteinsBunny · 17/09/2018 17:32

It doesn’t sound high to me but we’re replacing with timber sash windows. A bay, and a couple of singles plus the remdial work to the plaster and a little roofing job is costing £13500 (inc Vat) and we’ve got to pay for scaffolding on top.

Have you had a few quotes? We had 3 and this one wasn’t the most expensive.

We’re in SE but not London.

overnightangel · 17/09/2018 17:32

That sounds extortionate!!

WittgensteinsBunny · 17/09/2018 17:37

🤷🏻‍♀️ it is what it is. 6 big bespoke hardwood timber sash windows for a period property don’t come cheaply...

Olinguito · 17/09/2018 17:49

It was from a well established local company, who have a good reputation. I'm waiting for another to get back to me, but I think I'll need to do some more research. Thanks for your responses!

We’ve just had a quote for 2x bays and 3 windows. £6k for bog standard upvc and £7.8k for flush sash but that is with acoustic glass so maybe knock off a couple of hundred. They quoted £6k for 3 large sliding aluminium doors which was so much cheaper than other quotes so feel the windows are probably pretty competitive too.

Alexalee · 17/09/2018 19:11

Missy can you send me the companies details for the doors

Geneticsbunny · 17/09/2018 19:13

Have you thought about refurbishing the current windows (if they are wood) instead? We are getting the whole house done, including 2 bays, over 20 Windows in all and it is only going to cost £17,000, although we are up north so might be more expensive in London.

Oblomov18 · 17/09/2018 19:30

Christ. Is that all? Dh had our whole house done 20 years ago for £2300.

This time we were quoted £16k!!

Ended up at £10k. Through strong negotiation!

Quoted: Our small house, 2 bi-fold doors were about £7k, £4k for 10 other windows, plus more £k fir smaller windows and extras, plus a front door.

We’re in outer west London and having 7 windows, French doors and composite front door for £5500. You’re quote sounds a little high!

FreerOfIcefyre · 17/09/2018 22:57

We are in the North and we went with a local company, good reputation, who manufacture their own windows meaning they could quote me on the spot. None of this huge quote stuff then bartering down.

I used an online company to get a ballpark cost for supplying a window and the local company was about the same but included the fitting as well. I think the online one was doubleglazingontheweb. They just emailed me but no follow up or annoying emails.

Cost increases the more openers you have. So I have 3 panel windows (x 4) and have 2 full height openers and 1 small opener in the middle. I know the french doors were £1000 - they are part of a square bay with 4 more windows.

We had easy clean hinges meaning the windows slide to the side to allow you to clean the outside from inside.

I can't remember how much it cost but the online company was a great starting point.

If a company is getting back to you they are usually ringing round manufacturers to find the best quote so you are paying for the middle man.

LittleIzzy3 · 29/11/2018 21:41

You could consider WindowSkins - about 15% of the comparative cost, and highly effective

ChishandFips33 · 30/11/2018 07:49

We paid around £6000 for 14 windows and a patio door. Included toughened glass as some windows have low sills, tilt and turn and coloured upvc

We went for a local company with a fab reputation - we always thought them to be expensive but on enquiry we thought they were reasonable

crimsonlake · 30/11/2018 09:37

North West here, I replaced 5 windows for £2,300, two of those were huge bay windows. I got 3 different quotes and the other two were asking over £1k more for less windows. I went with a company who manufactured their own, had to wait a while for them to come out and quote and even longer to fit, but it was worth the wait.

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 30/11/2018 22:01

Windows cost a fortune, I went on our local Facebook group and looked for recommendations for local fitters. I then got a few quotes, I went with one who was highly recommended but was also the cheapest. They cost me thousands though!

Sofabunnyuk · 01/12/2018 01:44

I’ve gotten a few quotes for full replacement windows for a 1930’s semi. 9 windows in total, (3 of which are large bays, 1 small bay and the rest smallish windows) triple glazing Rehau windows £4k. I’m in West London. The company is in Berkshire.

High priced quotes I have received were around £10 - 12k from local companies

Sofabunnyuk · 01/12/2018 01:47

I should’ve mentioned that includes fitting and coloured UPVC on the outside

Mamia15 · 02/12/2018 19:28

Try local suppliers - much better service as well as prices.

Samthrelfall · 04/12/2018 15:53

This website gives you idea about prices. I recently got 4 quotes for upvc windows with them, Although I finalised with one of the Local Installer who gave me the best price compared to other. hope this helps.
