Your renting experiences

So I'm being forced back into renting again for a while after a separation. Just got the keys to my new place and, surprise surprise, its filthy. I've rented many properties in the past and I would say 99% of them have not been clean when I've moved in.
I know I should say something to the landlord but, I suspect he won't really care. So, I've spent all morning cleaning (and not even started on the disgusting oven yet).
It really annoys me that these landlords clearly don't care and must assume that because you rent, you don't have high standards.
Does anyone else have experience of this? I assume its common?

It should be clean, and you should tell your landlord (take photos) and say you will do it yourself as it will be quicker and more convenient for both of you. Ask for a reduction in the rent this month.

I have to say though, this is often the case also when buying a house. My current house was a shit tip when we moved in - just had to deal with it.

I’ve rented for a long time and I’ve never had to clean a property when I’ve moved in.
I mean, I do tend to clean them as you don’t know how long they’ve been empty and I like to know it is clean but I’ve never had to do a deep clean or anything. I’d be massively complaining if I had to.

crappyday2018 · 16/09/2018 18:43

I know I should tell him but I feel a bit uncomfortable. I have taken photos though and will email them to the estate agent so I have evidence for when I move out. The carpets are awful - full of holes and candle wax etc. I will also take photos of all that.
I'm about to had the keys over for my house I;ve just sold and it will be spotless - I couldn't bear to think that someone thought I wasn't clean!
Thankfully this is temporary until I can build another deposit.
It just angers me Angry

not good enough by any stretch. how are the legals as per the how to rent guide you were given if this is England?

was it a shithole when you viewed it? I also suspect your slumlord wont care but if he has skimped the legals you should be able to get out.

crappyday2018 · 16/09/2018 19:04

@specialsubject yes it is England. I will have a read through.
Don't get me wrong, shithole is a bit strong but the ensuite shower was dirty with mould around it and the oven hadn't been cleaned. Carpets hadn't been hoovered (although not as bothered about that).
When I viewed it, someone was living in it so its harder to see the dirt because it was full of stuff and she was packing so there were boxes everywhere. Now its empty, I can see how bad it is. All the walls are covered in marks, scrapes and picture hooks (and stupid sticker things from previous tenant). Carpets are very worn with holes, marks and candle wax!
The landlord seemed a nice enough bloke but he has several properties so obviously just can't be bothered looking after them. He even said when I met him "It could do with a lick of paint".
He clearly just gets one tenant out and another straight in!

Make sure there is a check in report (do your own if they've not arranged) take photos of all the dirt/damage. As nice as landlord seems don't put your deposit at risk as they soon change their tune on check out. If you did have a check in report done, refuse to sign if it says "clean" anywhere and they won't amend it.

Joe66 · 16/09/2018 19:39

We have them professionally cleaned, carpets cleaned and we repaint where necessary. No scuffs etc. For people renting, when you view the property ask whats being done between tenancies, and get it in writing. And we photograph everything.

crappyday2018 · 16/09/2018 19:52

There was no check-in report or anything. I'll take all the photos and send them to the agent, so they are officially on file and I have a record of the email.
There is a real lack of decent (and reasonably priced) 3 bed rentals in my area unfortunately!

Send the photos now - don't wait until end of tenancy. You may not be able to prove when they were taken.

We complained in one rental and they sent a cleaning company in!

crappyday2018 · 16/09/2018 20:26

Yes I will take some when I go back tomorrow (I've not moved my stuff in yet) and email them straight to the agent.

well, thats a start - I expected ' what how to rent?'. gas safe? deposit protection? epc? smoke alarm?

demand ( not mention) that it is properly cleaned before you move in. Even if it is cheap because it is tatty, that is no excuse for filth.
