we have built-in kitchen cabinets like in pic. i'm looking for a set of 2 sliding glass doors to replace some we're missing.

they're tempered glass, like a fridge salad drawer thing, with a dimple/handle. does anyone know if they were they regular sizes? and if i stand a hope in hell of finding a spare set? or would i be best just to get new ones cut?

ta :)

Take a photo of the handle and ask a glass merchant if they know where to get them. I assume there's a hole in the glass so you need to source handles first.

Have you looked on ebay for the whole doors?

Tempered glass is ordinarily glass, it breaks into shards and splinters.

Would be usual in an old cupboard. Yours might be 4mm thick, which is light and weak.

Safety glass is toughened, it has to be made to size in a factory and cannot afterwards be cut or drilled. Glass merchants can order it. I don't know if you can get it with finger holes.

Laminated glass is also safety glass and glaziers can cut it. AFIK the minimum commercial thickness is 7mm. It is heavy. 7mm will not fit the grooves in your cabinet.

You'd have to specify the finger holes when ordering. We have glass doors at work and any cutting has to be done when the piece is cut to size from the large panel before it is then toughened - we've had to replace a couple and also order new ones when reconfiguring things. If the new glass is thicker than the original, you'll probably need new track for the unit.

You could consider getting replacements cut from thick acrylic - yes it will scratch more easily but it will be a lot cheaper.

thanks all.

yeah tempered might have been the wrong word - obscure glass? it's ripply/pebbled :D

had a quick look on ebay (which is where the pic came from), nada atm.

it's 1/8th inch/3mm thick.

i'd really like glass rather than plastic as the weight helps them glide well. i've had all kinds of plastic laser-cut to spec - can you do that with glass??

You should still have tempered or laminated glass in a cupboard like that for safety reasons - the glass merchant will be able to advise on your options. It's unlikely you'll be able to match the pattern exactly - only Pilkington's seem to manufacture obscured glass and there are about 9 patterns available. Cotswold is probably the closest to the original.

wowfudge · 13/09/2018 13:36

I've just enlarged your photo and Cotswold isn't the closest pattern at all. If you can remove one of the remaining glass doors and take that in to the glass merchants, that would probably be best as they can use it as a template.

appreciate all the assistance :)

i just ran an online quote for 4mm toughened frosted glass as that would be close enough, not fussed on matching the pattern (that pic isn't my cupboards btw, just an example). with holes drilled and radius corners.

came out at 200 quid Shock

did i mis-type the measurements? Grin

Try some more online sites. We've had replacement (patterned etc) glass cut to order for our 1950s front door and it was around that price for one very large piece and two side panels.

heartofgold · 13/09/2018 14:17

okay, found somewhere else more reasonable, and apparently "dubbed corners" are much cheaper. down to £50 plus shipping...

Is there not a glass merchants anywhere near you? I've used one in Manchester a few times - for custom safety glass shelves and a cabinet mirror and found them very reasonable. Bear in mind that you want a custom size in obscure glass which has then been toughened so it's not a standard product. I thought it would be pricey which was why I suggested acrylic.

heartofgold · 14/09/2018 10:31

wowfudge there probably is but i default to online because access to a car takes more planning! but shipping costs on glass will be high unless they regularly do small orders?

anyone suggest what search terms might find me the rubber handle/bung? "flush finger pull" is bringing me up a larger version to go in wooden doors/drawers or thicker, commercial-type glass. 4mm is plenty thick enough. closest so far is for vivariums but v cheap :D
