Cupboard door falling off!!

Help me please! My kitchen cupboard door has been wobbling a bit for ages. I’ve kept tightening it up but the screw just fell out and now it’s hanging off
How do I repair it? Old screw won’t go back in now
Help!!

The hole has probably worn. Cheapest trick is to pack it with a few pieces of match stick then screw back on.

Ooh that’s exciting. How small do I need to break the bits? How do I poke them in?
Thank you!

In my student days we used to soak match sticks in water after breaking off the tip. Plug the hole with a few matches (the hinges had very big holes) and then screw in the screw. The kitchen in our house was a faulty batch looking back.

match sticks vom Envy vom Envy

you can get a repair plate and do it properly.

Post a photo if you can

is it loose in the door or in the cabinet?

Most likely you need this

note that kitchen units use a special screw called a "Euroscrew"

You can buy a pack of 50 or so.

This worked for me. Drill out the hole/s to the same depth with a slightly larger bit than the current hole. Fill the hole with a wood filler that is sandable & drillable. Leave to cure as per instructions, position the hinge, drill a small pilot hole and screw the hinge back.

PigletJohn · 13/09/2018 10:14

The repair plate is what you want. Take off the door by unscrewing both hinges before you start. Put plates on both. Can you lay your hands on a drill? You will need pozi screwdrivers.

Buy a few spare plates and screws so you have some for next time.

Thanks PigletJohn. Useful for me too and I will need couple of packs of 10. While kitchen is falling apart!!!

Polkapjs · 13/09/2018 16:58

Being thick but where does the plate go?

OP posts:
Polkapjs · 13/09/2018 20:24

Hmmm so the old hinge sits on top of the plate but held on by the corners ?

PigletJohn · 13/09/2018 23:00

The hinge screws onto the plate. The plate screws to the side of the cabinet.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 14/09/2018 10:08

Unless I'm missing something that plate has a right angle piece that goes across the front of the cabinet. How do you get the door to fit flush with cabinet?

PigletJohn · 14/09/2018 10:55

the lip fits on the edge of the panel. I haven't got one here to measure but the metal is quite thin. Certainly less than 0.5mm. The doors probably already have a little clearance already; if they don't, then moving them out by such a tiny fraction is unlikely to be noticeable.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 14/09/2018 11:02

Thanks PJ.

GrumpyOlderBloke · 14/09/2018 11:21

Every day is a school day!

@PigletJohn thanks for that. I've never seen them, never heard of them, wouldn't have known what to put into Google to find them.

I would drill out to 8 or 10mm, glue in a dowel then redrill the pilot for the Euroscrew. These 'bodger plates' make short work of making a repair.

Polkapjs · 15/09/2018 18:39

Piglet thank you so much!
