Kitchen dilemma

Has anyone recently had a Wickes kitchen installed? We are looking at Milton Bone with Slabtech worktops. Our kitchen is a not huge and is a slightly awkward shape so everything has had to be juggled around to fit. We have been quoted nearly £14k for the products plus £3.6k for installation, then will have to add plastering, electrics and flooring and tiles on top. This is after all their discounts have been added. I'm not sure the end result will be worth the cost? Are they good quality?

This seems to be a high price if you say your kitchen is not huge. How large is it?

Have you had any other quotes?

It might be worth getting a quote from a local smart kitchen shop to see how it compares as they might be able to make better use of the space for a similar sum, or less.

I hear that DIY Kitchens are good quality and have many fans on here. They also seem to have a vast choice of sizes of units. Perhaps they are worth a look too.

The actual kitchen part of the room is 12 x 9 ft so probably rates as quite a big kitchen after all but I'm thinking it does seem a lot of money in any case.

That does seem quite a lot of money; I second getting some more quotations for the work.

We've just had a quote from an independent for £18k. That includes everything including levelling the floor, replastering the dining area and ceiling, even new fridge etc.

prettygreywalls · 11/09/2018 17:27

Have a look at Rixonway , they are pretty good , I've had kitchens from them and recommend but you will need your own fitter

Bookcase1 · 11/09/2018 17:48

I think that’s a lot.

We just had a Magnet kitchen fitted including installation, electrics and pricey quartz worktops for 14k. Have had to pay for tiling, flooring and appliances on top. It’s more than we wanted to pay but the convenience of having them do everything was worth it.

Bloody shell. By products do you mean white goods as well?

I am having an mainframe handmade solid timber kitchen. The units are £8k, fitting is 3.5.

hooliodancer · 11/09/2018 18:20

Stupid auto correct! An in frame hand made kitchen!

AshenFaced · 11/09/2018 18:54

We've had a quote from them recently and the designer was good but I think I'm favouring IKEA (massively cheaper) or DIY (cheaper, colour matched cabinets, painted doors, not flat pack).

The pricing seems... idiosyncratic. Tall larder cabinets in particular were £££, for no good reason except people will pay it, it appears. Quartz also seemed more expensive than other places. Milton does look nice though.

Wallywobbles · 11/09/2018 19:29

We have a huge DIY kitchen. Literally huge. Island alone is 3.20m long. With granite work tops it came in at about 18k€. DH fitted it. Yours seems expensive. I used OnePlan to design mine. Worth every penny. She puts a shopping list together for you too.

Sweetpea17 · 11/09/2018 19:31

The £14K quote is made up of units - not solid wood - (approx. £7K) and then the rest is for appliances (integrated dishwasher, ceramic hob, fridge freezer and cooker hood), also sinks and taps and worksurfaces which are Slab tech - which is man made resin. Seems to have added up frighteningly quickly. Are Wickes' kitchens worth it?

OP posts:
EnriqueTheRingBearingLizard · 11/09/2018 19:38

That seems a huge amount for Wickes, with an awful lot of work still left to arrange and pay for. I'd want at least a couple more quotes.

Tomboytown · 11/09/2018 19:44

Similar price to 2 friends.
The kitchens are good quality but not amazing.
One friend had smooth sailing. The other one everything went wrong. Depends on the team fitting it.
I’d shop around with local companies

Sweetpea17 · 11/09/2018 19:49

It seems the general opinion is to get another couple of quotes. I felt pressured (not by the salesman) to make a quick decision as their 50% sale is coming to an end but it seems they always have another sale straight after!

OP posts:
Jonathan1972 · 11/09/2018 21:38

No retailer has a large enough mark up to be offering a genuine 50% sale.
As far as total cost no one can tell you that's pricey because they don't know how many units you have, what sort of cabinets, what door finish, what inserts or pull outs.
If you are at all concerned speak to an independent kitchen studio for a comparison.

MrsSlocombesPussy · 11/09/2018 23:02

Do you have a benchmarx near you? As far as I can tell, their kitchens are identical to Wickes, but you'd have to find your own fitter.
I've been told that they are cheaper than Wickes.

MrsSlocombesPussy · 11/09/2018 23:03

Also builder advised us to play the kitchen companies against each other to get a better price.
