My house insurance is due for renewal and surprise surpise, it's gone up

I did't get the original one - my solicitor did it as part of the package and because she recommended Legal and General. Now its time to renew, but I haven't got a bloody clue about the main do's and don'ts; must haves, and can do withouts.

Any idea or help would be gratefully received!

Have a look online for some quotes. If you can find a company you’re happy with and they’re cheaper than your renewal quote, ring your current insurer and see if they can match the cheaper quote. If they can’t offer you a better deal then you can accept the cheaper deal and move elsewhere.

Thank you - I think that's part of the issue. I did a comparison website this morning, but there are so many options and additional add-ons and asking questions such as rebuilding cost, extended cover etc that I began to think that I'd actually no idea what I was getting a quote for!

I love doing car insurance and regularly play companies off against each other, but this is new to me!

the questions about property size, location, locks etc are straightforward.

contents - that is everything that would fall if you turned the house upside down plus carpets and curtains, all replaced brand.new. you have more than you think.

rebuilding cost - there is an online calculator. not the same as house value.

accidental.damage - foot through ceiling, paint.on carpet, tv knocked over.

need anything covered away from home?
home emergency cover is useful.

some ideas, I hope.
