Power Points and Media Drawer in Kitchen Island

Sounds like a very boring subject but kept me awake last night. Have to tell the builders where we need power points in our not yet installed kitchen. For main run of units I think I'm Ok but completely stumped for Island. We have dishwasher in island and I want a media charging station drawer. The top is going to quartz. Where do you put power points? What has worked well for you?
Any advice would be gratefully received!

We went for pop up sockets but that seems a really unpopular option on here! Works for us.

We have a double socket on one end under the breakfast bar overhang. It gets used for charging phones and laptops as DP sometimes sits there when wfh. I plug in the stand mixer there. The dishwasher socket is in a cupboard.

I looked at some remote control pop up sockets which have a section of worktop in the top so look pretty much invisible when not in use but they were pricey.

PigletJohn · 10/09/2018 18:59

I'd suggest under the overhang on each end, where stuff will not drip on them.

You can get drawers with power sockets inside the drawer so all charging is contained within the drawer. I've no idea how complicated this is to make though!

I would also suggest at least one not in a drawer - eg hidden under breakfast bar - for plugging in mixers etc.

I have two pop up banks of 4 in each. Huge Island though. My seating area has cupboards underneath because it is circular and therefore sockets were not possible. It depends on the design of the island. I literally have cupboards all sides!

Mine is 1300 wide so socket banks are in the middle space. I don’t get anything dripping on them. We have umpteen sockets so phones etc can really be charged anywhere and they don’t take up precious drawer space. You cannot use them in a drawer. We charge and use at the same time sitting at the Island. Works for us!

Is stuff charging in drawers not a bit of a fire hazard??

almondfinger · 11/09/2018 21:21

We put a double socket in the cupboard on each end of the island. Otherwise the first thing you would have seen on entering the kitchen was a socket. We only use it for electric mixers, food processors which come out do their job and are put away. We charge devices elsewhere.

PigletJohn · 11/09/2018 22:08

maybe bench sockets

EdWinchester · 11/09/2018 22:10

We have a charging cupboard. Never gets used.

I'm with Pigletjohn here , if you have an overhang on island where people sit - sockets on island upright "walls" - if you had 2 x double sockets would you need a charging drawer ? ( Although be fair I am not absolutely sure what a media charging station drawer is Grin ) Ds and Dh just plug their various devices in when they are sitting at the island.

Thanks so much for all your responses. Really helpful. I've now agreed all power points with electrician and we are having 2 double sockets in a cupboard and 2 more under the overhand. One of the cupboard ones will supply the media drawer/charging station. (we currently have our charging station in the sitting room and there are at least 8 devices and headphones etc at most times and it looks a real mess. Looking forward to having them all out of sight). I now have till this afternoon to agree lighting....groan......

if you're charging things in a drawer or cupboard, I think it ought to have a smoke detector in it.

Or possibly UK-made sockets incorporating USB outlets.

I hear that the chargers that start fires are usually illegal Chinese imports from Amazon, Ebay and market traders, not ones supplied by reputable phone and laptoy manufacturers.

BasiliskStare · 13/09/2018 03:54

OP and @pigletjohn possibly you can comment.

I still am not clear what a charging drawer is , but I appreciate the thought of having fewer messy wires / devices around etc - that I get.

I have some bookshelves with lighting. I think it is l e d. The unit which gives them power was stuck in a cupboard ( usually closed and actually I had put some other stuff in there. Some of the bookshelf lights stopped working and when the electrician looked the units which "fed" them had burnt through. It was a fire hazard.

Not saying your set up will be at all , but do do make sure that anything which heats up / electrical has enough air circulating round it.

In my earlier years I worked for a company which sold big computers. It was no coincidence the spreadsheet of costs included air conditioning.

I exaggerate for effect but even modern small devices can generate heat.

I do not mean to be alarmist & I am sure your electrican has worked it all out. I must google charging drawer , never heard of it . I take the approach of just -nagging- gently reminding DH and DS that we (I) do not want to see iPads , phones , laptops etc etc and their associated wires all over our tiny house at all times, so could they just possibly have a home and plug of their own. Grin

The sockets under the kitchen island overhang work well - not obtrusive but near where people sit on kitchen stools so very handy.
