Dining hall?

I'm looking to move from our pokey little flat in the next year or so and have been looking to see what I can possibly afford. I have a teenage DS and top of my list is a bigger bedroom for him and space to put a dining table.

Anyway, I don't want to overstretch myself financially and I have a seen a couple of flats like this one www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-73749791.html which are in budget, but lacking dining space.

My question is, would it be weird to use the hallway as a dining room in this type of flat?

Thanks.

@starbrightlight

Yes, I'm not moving for another year, roughly. Was just looking for opinions on using a Hall as a dining room and that was an example of the type I'd go for

Lovely.

starbrightlight · 09/09/2018 17:20

Oh I see. Silly me. That new link is gorgeous. I hope you get what you want when the time comes. I do think a dining area in the kitchen is more family-friendly but if it has to be in the hall (off the kitchen) then it could work like in the first link.

AllAtHome · 09/09/2018 17:22

They’re all nice!

BriocheBriocheBrioche · 09/09/2018 17:23

I think it could work. Look up AliceJT on instagram. She has a dining/hall and it looks great.

Knittedfairies · 09/09/2018 17:26

I like the idea of a folding table in a hall/dining area; I wouldn’t want to walk around a table to get everywhere else.
(Picture 9 in your last link isn’t very informative is it? A bunch of pink chrysanthemums....)

letsgetouttahere · 09/09/2018 17:31

@Knittedfairies space permitting, I would rather have a permanent table, nicely set up. A bench style maybe.

Estates round here seem to be big into bizarre "feature shots" just now! No, I'm not particularly interested in your kids you train set or kitchen clock Hmm

Can we all move in? These flats are stunning with such amazing views!

1forsorrow2forjoy · 09/09/2018 17:35

@letsgetouttahere it just felt weird eating in the hall way! Ours was central to the flat too but maybe it was because it wasn't always used as a dining room it felt strange. Eg, if we bought all our shopping in from the shops it would have been a pain to then have a table as an obstacle to get round too

MessySurfaces · 09/09/2018 17:41

OP, I'd try posting on the Scotsnet board- there are bound to be plenty of people who live or have lived in that sort of flat, whereas it's really unusual south of the border.

Nyancat · 09/09/2018 17:41

I think it'd be lovely with a round table placed centrally in the hall.

MessySurfaces · 09/09/2018 17:43

Hah I posted that cos for some reason it was showing up as a thread with no replies! V glad to see it's not just a load of confused southerners...

Gobbolinothewitchscat · 09/09/2018 17:47

Love seeing these flats. My Granny used to live in Ashburn Gate!

lexer · 09/09/2018 17:47

There are lots of Art Deco flats near where I live. They have the luxury of large hallways and most of those are used as dining rooms.

letsgetouttahere · 09/09/2018 17:50

Really @Gobbolinothewitchscat ?!

Some great flats there. As a principle I'm a big fan of a dining hall. When space is tight, a dedicated hallway is a waste. If there's space I'd go for a feature round table and fold away chairs, so when it's not being used for eating, it just looks smart. If the kitchen had space for a tiny café table for two, so much the better.

Should you ever want to have more people round to eat you can get a square sheet of hardboard that lives under your bed and makes the dining table bigger on the odd occasion it's needed Smile

Notthisnotthat · 09/09/2018 17:54

I think it would work, I think the flat could have been 1 bedroom originally. My old flat in Shawlands is a 1 bed but a few in the block have been turned into 2 bedrooms. The kitchen is huge with a recess (and where my dining table is). and also a wee utility area.

Anyway sorry for rambling but it could work well and make good use of a huge space.

letsgetouttahere · 09/09/2018 17:56

Thanks anyway @MessySurfaces

Interesting to read that people down south might find these layouts weird! Though I do agree that the hallways are a bit of a waste of space!

We live in a period property and have a dining hall.

An issue can be the bathroom if it leads off the hall, not great if people are round for dinner, we have two doors between hall and toilet. In the second flat I would have the table in the bay window

RandomMess · 09/09/2018 18:01

I would certainly try it and see how it went...

I think key would be good storage for all the usual hallway "crap" - is that storage cupboard huge? The big advantage is that the bedrooms are just there so your crap has to be put in your own bedroom and not the
hallway dining room Wink

starbrightlight · 09/09/2018 18:02

I'm down south and I don't think it's weird. (Nothing to do with me coming from Scotland...)

Soontobe60 · 09/09/2018 18:20

Looking at the dimensions, thatbhallway would be too small to have a decent sized table. The table would need to go in the middle because of the doors, you've got approx Two x three metres.

letsgetouttahere · 09/09/2018 21:17

I think it looks big enough for a 4-6 person extending table, no?

OP posts:
AshenFaced · 10/09/2018 11:06

The hall looks plenty big enough for a normal dining room, but with a table right in the middle of the main thoroughfare I think it might quickly get annoying. Every bag of shopping, every cup of tea taken from kitchen to lounge round the obstacle.

They are stunning flats though and the living rooms are massive. You could try the table in the hall, and if it does get annoying there would be space for a small expanding table against the living room wall. Just buy one and you'll make it work one way or the other. Beautiful.
