Useless at IKEA but wanting to build own drawers

I was having a wander around IKEA earlier and I found an awesome looking bench storage unit for my hallway. However my hallway is pretty small and has a small step (not sure of the right word) where I guess the landlord has covered the pipes/ cables. Therefore the bench wouldn't be able to be pushed to the wall leaving around a 15cm gap.

This got me thinking of how hard would it be to create my own bench with storing which I could carve to fit to the wall? I used to do basic wood work with my dad in the garage as a kid but would this be too much of a challenge? Has anyone ever tried anything like this and got any advice on costing/timings/possible YouTube videos?

If you've done basic woodwork, you could buy the awesome ikea bench and adapt it?

Have a look at ikea Hacks website for inspiration

What’s the ikea unit? We may be able to deduce if hacking it is possible with a jigsaw

My suggestion would be: Buy the unit. Rest the back part on the boxing in, attach 2x 15cm legs to the front of the unit.

No advice but I definitely believe you can do it if you’ve got the time to figure it out and the fortitude to give it a go - go for it!

Brilliant!
