Grey and Navy paint that complement each other!

Hi hope you can help!

We're having our open plan living and dining area re-done. One side is south facing, the other is north facing. On all the walls we want a really subtle, light but warm grey, and on the fireplace (which will be boxed over) we would like a navy. The TV will be hung there too (quite low and on an adjustable bracket to ensure good viewing and no sore neck).

My question is can anyone give me advice on paint pairings, specific grey and navy colours that go together and look good in all types of light? We're looking at Dulux, Valspar or B&Q. We have polished pebble for most of the rest of the house so it would be nice to have something different. The flooring is also getting replaced, and will be a light oak.

Any help on colours which go together or images of your own colour combos like that would be great. thank you!

Hey I work in a paint shop and the most popular colour people seem to go for is ammonite it's a farrow and ball grey colour and it really is lovely a nice blue is their drawing room blue I think quiet a lot of paint shops can match their colour too

No problem f&b paint isn't cheap its about £80ish for 5 litres so ask around other paint shops to see if they can colour match for you 😃

another tip, if you are using an expensive paint, is to give the walls and ceiling a couple of coats of matt white (which is the cheapest) first.

Not only will it highlight any remaining blemishes to the eye so that you can smooth them before applying your expensive finish, it will even out the colour and texture of the wall so that you need fewer coats to prevent differences showing through.

You can also use grey if you are going to finish with a dark colour or if there is a mural or jagged pattern to hide.

On bare plaster or unpainted filler, the first couple of coats should be thinned with water ("mist coats") to seal the absorbent surface.

If you haven't made up your mind, it will also make the room look decent until you get round to finishing it.

thank you PigletJohn we're actually getting a decorator in who is planning on painting the the walls white first anyway. we have some patches that we have started ourselves so will be testing our testers on those sections! as you can imagine it all looks a bit of a mess at the moment lol

Don’t paint the blue wall white. Total nightmare to cover. Use a darker cheap paint to prime.

We have Hague Blue, Railings and Downpipe which are probably darker than you are looking for but compliment each other beautifully. Got colour matched for base coats then 2 coats of actual F&B estate emulsion on top to save money.
I do love F&B but must caution that we do not have children and I really doubt that estate emulsion would stand up to wear and tear.
I did my living room in Downpipe 8 years ago and it's still immaculate.
If you click on a paint colour on the F&B website, they recommend colour schemes at the bottom.
Sanderson paint comes in every colourway imaginable and the quality is unbelievable - knocks F&B out of the park but it is more expensive.

ammonite looked a bit beigey on our walls and stiffkey looked green for some reason!

Just used royal navy by little greene. Expensive but apart from the odd touch up it was only one coat. Fab stuff!

Sapphire Salute is lovely - I'm going to use that on one wall in my study.
