Kitchen walls - preparing for upstands

We’re finally having our new kitchen installed and the plan is to have quartz worktops with upstands. We’ve removed the old tiles and the surface is pretty smooth but not perfect. Will it just be silly to paint over where the tiles have come off? Or Would most people skim the walls first? And if so, do we need to do that before the upstands get installed?

The kitchen place have always said that the walls are our responsibility but not sure what we do.

Please help!

We are getting quartz with upstand too. Kitchen currently going in. They removed old kitchen and have skimmed walls before the new one goes in. I plan to paint before worktops are fitted too for best finish.

I would get it skimmed. It will give a much better finish. Less messy if they do it before the units go in.

Best to get them skimmed. Even if they look quite smooth now I think they need to be perfect as the old tile adhesive will have left tell-tale ridges which will show up when it's painted.

We're going through exactly the same thing and had resigned ourselves to more tiling as the walls were in such a bad state. Instead, we decided it was worth skimming it so it can be painted.

Thank you all. Sounds like we will need to get them skimmed then. Unfortunately the units will already be in. Will it have to be done before the upstands go in?
