Welcome gift for tenants?

We are renting our house out for the first time and I'd like to leave something for the tenants. They have two small children as well. Flowers? Sweets for the kids?

Sounds lovely to me!

Jeffjefftyjeff · 03/09/2018 21:47

I always left a bottle of something fizzy. Even if they weren’t drinkers I figured they could regift it. Flowers also seems good idea but would need an in built container. Or a cake?

Blackbirdblue30 · 03/09/2018 21:48

Moving is stressful, give them wine :)

EmmaJR1 · 03/09/2018 21:48

Flowers, local take away menus, address of nearest corner shop/supermarket. Pub recommendations. That's the sort of thing I would have liked when I was renting.

ParkheadParadise · 03/09/2018 21:49

That's a lovely idea.
You could also leave a card.

Aaaahfuck · 03/09/2018 21:49

That sounds like a lovely thing to do. Flowers, fizz, chocs or a nice scented candle would be nice.

NC4Now · 03/09/2018 21:51

I bought my house from a friend. She left me prosecco, jelly babies and DS2s favourite type of cake.
Best of all, she left the place spotlessly clean. Smile

NorthernSpirit · 03/09/2018 21:58

No, keep this professional and take any emotion out of it. It’s a business deal now, a house you rent.

I’m a BTL landlord. A used to leave a bottle of fizz. But found that you need to be business like. It’s far easier when they stop paying the rent or trash your property.

batshitbetty · 03/09/2018 22:19

That's a lovely idea, the most helpful thing you can leave is a set of basic instructions (where to find the fuse box, who the utilities are with, what day is bin day etc)

serbska · 04/09/2018 08:21

People have gooogle on their smart phones...

A bottle of fizz or flowers/plant in a pot would be nice.

serbska · 04/09/2018 08:23

Although, actually, I’ve never been given a moving in gift when renting, no did I leave one as a LL.

The best LLs are those that don’t come anywhere near you, unless you contact them with a problem (and then be super efficient and get it sorted ASAP)

eggsandwich · 04/09/2018 08:28

Keep it professional, so no I wouldn’t leave a gift its a nice thought if your selling the property and lesving something for the new owners, but I wouldn’t if I’m their landlord.

BubblesBuddy · 04/09/2018 08:41

A sparkling clean property, everything in tip top order, all instruction manuals and basic info about where to find what - meters, stop cock, etc. I don’t leave gifts but the tenants get all of the above!

specialsubject · 04/09/2018 09:47

new home card and a box of chocs. normal people appreciate it, with the deal steal trash brigade it makes no difference.

ditto a sparkling property with instructions.and all legals correct - do it. you may still get a kicking.

Onthebrink87 · 04/09/2018 10:40

I have always rented and never been left a gift, i think it's a lovely idea and I imagine most decent folk would be so pleased to have a good ll you'll find they are good tenants (had lovely ll once and often put my hand in my own pocket so as not to be a pain such as plumbers and electricians)

I think tea bags and a pint of milk is always a welcome thing to see in the kitchen or even just a 'new home' card!

But it's never expected and isn't commonplace so I wouldn't worry too much about it either way

lastqueenofscotland · 04/09/2018 12:32

My last landlord left us a little box with a bottle of washing up liquid, a loaf of bed, tea and left some milk and prosecco in the fridge

FrankieChips · 04/09/2018 13:13

lastqueenofscotland that's exactly what I would want :) Only one of our landlord's gave us a present (a box of chocolate and a card) which we really appreciated. She was female so maybe this is why. None of the male landlords cared, lol.

EachPeachPearRum · 05/09/2018 12:56

I've gone with card, flowers, bottle of wine and biscuits for the kids. House is spotless. I don't have the manuals for my appliances but I think most people can work a washing machine/oven etc. Or they could google if really stumped. Should I really try to get duplicates of the manuals? The agent is showing them the meters/alarm etc.

The one we've just moved into is in a complete state. The cupboards are sticky despite having been "professionally cleaned" I spent an hour clearing rubbish out of the garden. They left old rusting appliances including a huge grill dumped on the drive so the movers had to clear it all to the side to get the truck on the drive. I found a broken laundry basket loads of crisp packets and loads of broken toys. The worst was the shed which had half empty and lidless pots of paint and various cleaning supplies.

I would try and send PDFs of the manuals at least? They usually have stuff like how to clean the filter or get the liquid drawer out etc for maintenance/cleaning. I dunno, I hate not being able to look up the stuff in the manual and have a manuals folder for my own home.

Nacreous · 05/09/2018 13:01

Posted too soon, sorry.

Moving into the new place sounds frustrating and exhausting - it’s so sad when you’ve tried so hard but then the new place isn’t clean for you.

Cindersdonegood · 05/09/2018 13:09

I like the idea of travel size essentials like teabags, sugar and coffee, a washing up sponge and a tiny fairy liquid. However, every time I move, those are packed in the essentials box anyway and are the first things unpacked.
Flowers are nice but I imagine they probably won't have a vase handy or even a decent place to put them amongst all the boxes.

Printed PDFs of instructions for everything left in a plastic wallet is definitely the thing I would want and need.

Fluffybat · 05/09/2018 13:27

Just wanted to say OP that's a lovely gesture.

consternation · 05/09/2018 13:50

We have properties we rent out. We don't leave a gift when a new tenant moves in. However we give them our mobile nos and tell them to call us immediately for any repairs or problems. And we tell them that as long as the rent is paid on time and the place kept nicely they will have their contract renewed every year and there will be no rent increase for the duration of their tenancy.
