Help please! Struggling to pick the right paint colour

We've just moved into a renovation project, but may be at least a year before we even touch inside. The decor is hideous and very grubby.

We thought as a quick fix to brighten things up we might just emulsion the walls (over wallpaper etc) in a neural colour and not touch woodwork, just give it a good clean. Wanting just one colour, so we can just buy loads and paint whole house.

My initial thoughts were a warm off white, Johnstone Trade's Latitude as my previous house had a lot of it (v similar to Dulux Tumeless). However I have since realised that's what colour the woodwork is! Might be justvyellowed, but I don't think so. What light, neural colour can I pick to go with it? Greige? Help! Something with yellow tones maybe?!

Darrow and ball maybe? I'm new to Farrow and ball. Uploaded couple of pics in case that helps. First one illustrates wood work, def not white (think dado and coving is white). I want something to go with door frame.

Second pic, wall and woodwork about same colour.

Any opinions gratefully received!

Doesn't look too bad to me - at least it's not very in-your-face colours or totally hideous patterns! Don't waste your money on Farrow and Ball if it's just a stopgap.

What about Egyptian Cotton?

We’ve done several renovations and believe me, the colours are fine as they are, for the short term. It’s not worth the time, effort and money to redecorate it as a temporary thing- it not hideous!

It IS work cleaning everything really well. Melamine sponges are amazing on doors, wood work, painted walls etc (obviously not on wallpaper). A bit of elbow grease will work wonders.

*it is WORTH

Egyptian Cotton is a great neutral - white gloss paint go yellow after a while, so I would go for white satinwood when doing the woodwork.

Buttermilk is a good name to search on for something like magnolia but with a more yellow tone, and available cheaply in bulk.

Egyptian cotton is nicer and more modern IMO but buttermilk might be more forgiving of the yellow tones in the paintwork.

But personally I'd just clean it, or at most just paint your main living room.

Firstly, apologies for the appalling spelling. The photos were just to illustrate the colour of the woodwork. We have some truly hideous decor (see below for prime examples) The psychedelic donkeys are my personal favourite.

I'll think on it, thank you all!

Ah- well now I see what you mean! Those donkeys - they are going to take a lot of covering! Shock

FourOnTheHill · 02/09/2018 21:30

Haha that wallpaper is even worse than the house we moved into a couple of years ago! I don’t like spending time and money on temporary fixes so I steamed it off and we lived with bare and in some places crumbling plaster for a year or so and did the rooms one at a time.

FourOnTheHill · 02/09/2018 21:31

Re farrow and ball, definitely don’t waste that much money on painting over donkeys, the colours and finish are beautiful but the coverage is dreadful you’ll end up doing about 300 coats over those donkeys

wowfudge · 04/09/2018 18:38

I quite like the donkeys they're kitsch! But yes, I see what you mean.

Kdubs1981 · 04/09/2018 19:26

Thanks all. Farrow and ball will only ever be a colour match in our house!

There's been a surprising amount of love for the donkeys!
