Insurance for house during building work?

Hi. Does anyone have experience of getting insurance during building works please? Our insurer has just cancelled our policy as they will not cover for major work, and also we will not be living onsite. Thanks.

Try your mortgage lender

Tower gate offer specialist insurance for this

Your builder should cover the property as part of their works policy - you need a copy

Plus you may want to look at 21.2.1 cover

Builders' policies don't routinely cover contents - particularly if you have jewellery etc specified on your own policy. You need your own cover

Thanks all. The builder's insurance is there to cover the work that they are doing and also their public liability for it, it doesn't cover the building itself or the contents. You still need your own policy, but most general household policies are not valid whilst major work is being carried out. I'll look at Towergate, thanks Gobbolino.

I have admiral and they happily provided extra cover. For extra money of course. Try them?

I paid my insurer a £50 fee whilst I had structural renovation taking place. I checked with them before I bought the annual policy as not all insurers cover it.

You need to let your insurers know if it is major work eg anything that involves a load bearing wall etc.

LeakyLoftHatch · 07/09/2018 05:30

That's interesting Often and Roses, thank you. Our existing insurance was with Admiral and they just instantly said that they could no longer cover us, full stop. I've got some other quotes which vary hugely (between £200 and £900) - crazy. I just need to compare what the cover actually is now.

Oh my. I paid &£70 extra and that was itShock I guess you are having much bigger works done?

woodstack · 07/09/2018 23:30

We paid £900 3 years ago Shock. Was a nightmare trying to find any at all to be honest. It was through Renovation Plan.

woodstack · 07/09/2018 23:31

Living off-site was the problem I think..

DesperatelySeekingSense · 07/09/2018 23:42

When we gutted our place, we got quotes from Towergate and Endsleigh. Went with Endsleigh and was all very straightforward. Just checked and the quote was for £450 based on buildings sum insured of £500k.

OftenHangry · 08/09/2018 00:02

Yeah. I have a cheap house compared to that Shock and stayed on site. That's probably that.
