bike store in front of the house - planning permission?

I am looking to get rid of our shed in the back garden to gain more room but still need somewhere to store bikes and garden tools.

Our front garden is the same size as the back, so I was thinking about adding 2 wooden bike stores out the front along the side fence. Neither would be higher than the fence but they would be in front of the property. I've read that a shed would need planning, but I assume this is because a shed is typically taller than a 2 metre fence and could cause a visual obstruction?

Would a wooden bike store, no taller than the fence require planning permission also?

If they in front of the main front wall of your property, then yes, planning permission would be required.

Hi Seeline - thanks.
Yes I would want them in front of the house, it turns a cheap £200 bike shed into a rather expensive option!!

You would have to pay the application fee, but for a basic structure, you could just enclose photos of the proposed store (I assume you are purchasing a standard product and could get pictures and/or plans from the company) and a copy of your deed plan indicating where it would go. You wouldn't need architects or anything. I appreciate the basic application fee would probably double the overall cost though.

A house in our village (AONB and green belt so very restricted on development) has build log storage along one fence next to their drive. It is open at the front but has 4 bays. If you built similar but put doors on, would this need pp? The log storage hasn’t got pp. would this work? It’s unobtrusive but probably more expensive to install that a shed. Looks ok though.

Hi Bubbles,
Sounds similar to what we are planning, 2 bike stores with a roof added across the top in the middle to store logs under...here's my literal back of an envelope sketch!
It does sound very much like we need planning permission for anything front of the house from the link Seeline sent.
Planning portal suggests £206 fee. So overall project would likely be around the £700 so I guess if we have to pay planning I should go the whole hog and add in a bin store as well!

Basically if you put a nice, discrete low cycle storage against the side I very very much doubt you would get an enforcement notice.
