Another kitchen question: is your hob set into a breakfast bar?

And, if so, what kind of lighting do you have above it?

My original thought was to have the sink set into the breakfast bar and the hob behind it against the wall. I'm thinking now, though, that I would spend more time standing at the hob than standing at the sink, so would prefer to be facing 'out' than 'in'!

We were going to put three pendant lights above the breakfast bar ... but this might not be a good idea if they were to be above a hob rather thank a sink? I'm thinking grease/steam, perhaps even something that's against regulations? (Not sure about that!)

So, if you have a hob set into a breakfast bar, what sort of lighting do you have above it?

I love hob on island layouts. Means you save the walls for cupboards and I spend more time at the hob than sink.

We had an extractor hood above so I can’t help with the lighting query but I would not want to have dangly pendants above a hob even with a good downdraft extractor.

We are intending to have our hob on the island. Hob will be towards one end of the island and breakfast bar around the other end. Single pendant (wipeable!) above breakfast bar end and down lights above hob. Actually we'll have a flush ceiling extractor fan and the downlights will be part of that.

We actually put the sink on the island. I didn’t want an extractor fan over the island ruining the look. As it is, when we cook with guests around, it’s not that big a deal because then they can’t see exactly what I’m doing when cooking. I hate people watch me cook!

Not in our current place but we had the hob island set up previously. There was an extractor fan over the hob that also had spotlights. Wouldn’t be my first choice of look but it was a new build. I imagine a pendant light would get a bit icky.

I have hob in breakfast bar and 3 pendants. Haven’t had a problem so far.

This is helpful - thank you!

I've got lost in a warren of online extractor fans this morning and have found this sort of thing . I know I need extraction, but I also want pendant lights too. Assuming these pendant extractors effective and the reviews are good, they pretty much fit the bill (I hope!).

it might need to be extra-wide to prevent anything hot going over the side.

And to dissuade spoonyfuckers

Your thousand-pound "hoods" seem to have no ducts so they will not remove steam or hot air, they are presumably just recirculators, which are primarily ornaments.

You could have a ceiling-mounted canopy extractor.

Thanks PigletJohn - you've (wisely) put me off them now!

Back to the drawing board ...

Elica make some nice canopies. Not sure if they still offer one where the motor goes outside the wall, so your kitchen is quieter.

Their website is awful to navigate, but email them and ask for the glossy brochure (tell them why), which makes it easy to compare the size, power and noise, technical drawings and photos. I like one that will whisper along on low power, but can be turned up to hurricane while you are grilling kippers or frying curry paste.

I got mine from Epicair, a good retailer. They might order in if not stocked.
