Hi there. I am a primary school teacher living in Dorset with my husband and 2 daughters aged 5 and 8. We want to relocate to Lincoln next summer and as you can imagine have a lot to think about. School for me,schools for the girls and a home. Hubby is sorted jobs wise. We are v excited but any info on living in and around Lincoln would be fab. We have family in Digby and Sleaford so know the area a little. We are both ex forces so literally happy to stick a pin in the right place to settle. We have lived countryside and city and we all enjoy a dog walk with lunch and a drink at a local pub. Any info would be great.

I don't have any useful local information to add, as I'm not a local, but this is just to say I hope you have a lovely time there - Lincoln is gorgeous.

jd83 · 28/08/2018 17:22

Oh thankyou. It's a big move for us but very excited.

You would be best choosing a village on the same side of the city as your job/s. The traffic through Lincoln at rush hour is dreadful. It can taken 20 mins to go a mile, more if there is any accident as it only takes one car accident or broken down lorry on one of the hills and the whole city gridlocks.

GrowThroughWhatYouGoThrough · 28/08/2018 17:31

I used to live in Lincoln. Where you or you husband work will make a difference to where you will want to live as traffic in Lincoln is horrendous!!! The villages are lovey particularly navenby, waddington (where the raf base is) harmston, saxilby. Feel free to ask me any questions

Best primaries for your DDs would be in the northern villages: Reepham, Scothern, Welton (also has outstanding secondary) Nettleham. They're also nice places to live (esp Nettleham), but the place to be in Lincoln itself (although more challenging on the schools front) is uphill and as close to the Bailgate area/Cathedral quarter as possible.

I live fairly local to Lincoln and used to live a lot closer so know the area relatively well.

There are lots of schools in Lincoln both public and state schools.

Where abouts in lincoln is your husband going to work? Traffic is an absolute nightmare.

tootstastic · 28/08/2018 17:35

Agree on the traffic!

Lots of fab info thankyou. My husband is a hgv driver so would be working out of Lincoln. We currently live in a very touristy place with no motorways so he is currently always stuck in traffic. Would happily move to a village if good transport links but will defo look at houses on the same side as our jobs. Are there any 'no go' areas as far as buying goes?

Hopefully you'll have a cracking budget moving from super £££ Dorset to there! Hope it all works out for you.

We live in Woodhall Spa, which has lots of facilities including a cinema and a lido ( great for your children!) but is around 17 miles from Lincoln, and as pp said, traffic can be brutal in rush hour. The cliff villages are lovely - I particularly like Navenby, which has the added advantage of being only 20 minutes from Newark ( mainline trains and the A1). If you’re thinking of living in Lincoln itself, there are lots of modern developments on the outskirts of the city, both north and south. You may be interested in the West End of the city (Victorian/Edwardian houses) - from there, you can walk into the city in 10 minutes and also be in the historic centre of Uphill Lincoln in 15 minutes.
Good luck with your move!

The ermine st Giles a few areas around boutham park arnt great areas

MamaBearThius · 28/08/2018 17:51

I live in Heighington and absolutely love it!!

thenightsky · 28/08/2018 17:52

Agree with PP that Navenby area is good if you want to be near Newark for the train south (1 hour 20mins into Kings Cross). Also near the A1.

If you want to be within the City then uphill, Bailgate area is probably best. Near the Cathedral. West end looks nice, but a lot of the houses are student lets. Avoid St Giles and Ermine East and West, although its a fine line between them and nicer bits like Burton Road.

I'd look at one of the cliff villages, the schools are all good (2 outstanding secondaries and a few outstanding primaries) and it's easy to move between the villages. There is a decent bus service into Lincoln although it stops after 7pm and as there is the RAF base here, there will be a lot of people that are or have been in the forces. There are a high number of people that buy a house here whilst posted and then they settle and their spouse comes home at weekends.
