CARAVAN Shock

The rental properties round here are extortionate and he wants to be on site. Part of me thinks, OK suck it up, another part of me thinks it'll end in divorce.

The whole house is being changed except 1 room and that needs work too so we need to get out.

So if we go the caravan route, do we need planning? Would a cabin be better?
Can you lift a mobile home over a roof?

I'm just wondering what our options are.

If you have nowhere to put a caravan at the front, you won't be able to lift a caravan over the house.

AsAProfessionalFekko · 27/08/2018 11:24

For living or holidays?

wowfudge · 27/08/2018 11:33

Pretty obvious is as a temporary home while work is carried out on the house. What about a shipping container for storing your furniture too?

AsAProfessionalFekko · 27/08/2018 11:35

Oh I see. Fine - my sister and bil did this when their farmhouse was being rebuilt. No one died! And no, the big ones are an absolute bugger to move.

AnalyticalChick · 27/08/2018 11:35

What about living in a shipping container?

Shutupsidney · 27/08/2018 11:43

We have 'just enough' room to get a touring caravan down the side. We wouldn't want to be at the front as work vans etc, and half the front it being extended too so a building site.

Shipping containers might be an option this is getting worse

It's horrible living in or on a building site. But if it's necessary, it's necessary.

beeefcake · 27/08/2018 11:58

If you look up justalittlebuild on instagram her and her family lived in a caravan for 8 months whilst their house was being renovated

PigletJohn · 27/08/2018 12:53

I've known people live in caravans during building work. Unless it's pretty big, two are better than one. Small ones are cramped and you will get on top of each other. Maybe one for sleeping and one for cooking and living? It will save you folding up and reassembling the furniture. You can also put up a sturdy shed for tools and materials.

I don't understand the pricing model, but big ones on parks get replaced while they still have life in them. Rainwater leaks seem to be a very annoying problem.

PigletJohn · 27/08/2018 12:56

some superior sheds

You'd need planning permission if you're going to sleep in them as living quarters.

Shutupsidney · 27/08/2018 13:45

Thanks @pigletjohn we were think 2 as one would be far too cramped with 4 of us.

The cabin idea works too, but planning is another moving part. Thanks for clarifying that.

Shutup

You can definitely lift a mobile home over a roof.

But I`ve no idea how much it would cost

serbska · 27/08/2018 17:37

Yes you can. You can get cranes that come and park on the road and lift over things like caravans. Expensive though.

bobkate · 27/08/2018 23:01

We are doing lots of work on our house at the mo and have our touring caravan on the drive. To date, we've only had to use it for cooking but as of Weds we will have to use it properly. Sleeping, cooking, the lot. 4 humans and 2 dogs. I am just hoping it won't be for too long!. Divorce is not on the cards yet! Grin

specialsubject · 28/08/2018 09:47

dont use a shipping container for storage - your stuff will be wrecked by damp.and vermin. proper climate controlled warehouse needed.

Shutupsidney · 28/08/2018 12:21

@bobkate as you're on your drive in the caravan, did you add anything into the planning app for this?

Did your single room have access other than through the house?

We could park 1 caravan on the drive and have one room inside, but it is via the hallway so within the build.

Currently been living in a 6 berth with end bathroom for the last year (!) while we renovate our house entirely. We have a 2, 4 and 5 year olds.

Have managed as had the kitchen until last week and always one working bathroom in the house. Also a living room. All of our furniture is in storage. We also have a very understanding builder!

bobkate · 28/08/2018 23:11

gobbolino that sounds about the same as us. Working bathroom, partial kitchen under a dust sheet, living room that's now also rather dusty but meh, living through that. Furniture is in storage. Yes, in a shipping container so I am now slightly worried about vermin!! Oh well - its been there since April, so they will have had a good feast if they have got in. Not much we can do about that now.
Nope, OP - nothing in planning about our van. It's sometimes on our drive anyway between trips and being in storage. The living room is accessed only through the front door - so we have the builders trudging past minute by minute! Luckily they are all very lovely - been happy to work around us. Some plasterboard has gone up today so we're going in the right direction! Light glimmering down towards the end of this vvvvvv long tunnel!!
