House in a London commute town

Hello everyone
We are thinking of buying our first house, but as currently only have a budget of £300 000, we don’t know where to look. We understand it will be out of London, but still trying to stay as close as possible.
We have a two year old son, so good schools are desirable.
Would anyone be able to guide us in terms of area-cost of rail-reliability of train times please?

Depends where is London you want to get to.
If Paddington is where you need to commute to, then Reading is a good bet (30min train, v frequent), but 300k will buy you a 2 bed terrace e.g. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-65947789.html

That's assuming you want to be walkable to the station, could buy you more if you went further out.

Season ticket Reading to Paddington is c. £5k a year

Alternatively if you want to get to Waterloo have a look at Basingstoke (e.g. www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/nearby-schools/property-64767034.html )

You can get a £300K terraced house in Plumstead, London. Plumstead Common lovely, Crossrail coming, grammar school catchment.

I agree Mrs Patmore, Plumstead Common area is lovely and there are regular trains from Woolwich Arsenal which is within walking distance.

Well, that’s just the thing. My husband is in construction and his place of work moves often. That’s why we were not sure where to look, but I guess it should be somewhere close to a station with good transport links..
