Grey, the next magnolia?

I love the new grey colours, but concerned that very soon it'll be out of fashion. Grey kitchens seem the 'only' answer, grey floors, tones of grey on the walls, grey tiles, and grey carpets.

Is this the natural wood kitchens of the 90's, magnolia walls etc of previous eras?

I feel as if grey started about 8 or 9 years ago and we are now in peak grey. If I fit a grey kitchen, I'll be out of date all the sooner.

I've got nearly 90m sq of flooring to fit and I'm so undecided about colours. I love a limestone look, but concerned this is old hat too! Big space means a possible big mistake.

Opinions please.

We have a grey bathroom (painted approx 8 years ago), grey stairs & landing (3 years old) and a grey spare room (recent)

Its so ubiquitous that it will almost certainly start to date and is already a cliché

BUT, walls easily be repainted. I wouldn't invest in grey furniture, grey flooring or a grey kitchen which you would want to last longer.

I don’t think magnolia was ever fashionable, just the default at the time. At least there are many shades of grey to choose from.

I have a combination in my house - carpets are grey, because they hide a multitude of sins, some rooms are grey but generally only the walls. I’ve mostly got white with a hint of grey and lots of navy, gold, yellow, petrol type blues.

I like the grey in frame kitchens I’ve seen around lately and I don’t think they’ll date too much

Grey is neutral and will be around for a while yet. My interior designer has literally just done my kitchen with grey units and walls. The winner of the Remodelista 2018 kitchen award is a grey kitchen. My kitchen retailer said that people love the dark blue and green cabinets he has on display but rarely buy them because they’re worried they’ll date - his biggest sellers are white and grey. If all else fails you can just have your doors resprayed a different colour when grey is no longer trendy.

I’m just about to paint part of my hall and b dark grey. And a gold hay colour.

Yep new magnolia! My friend has just moved into a brand new house.

Every single room is grey, even the carpet. Bathroom tiles are grey and the floor tiles to. All accessories, light shades and bedding is some form of grey to.

I think it looks lovely but a bit bland for me personally.

Shutupsidney · 25/08/2018 19:25

ilove I think that's it really, it's bloody everywhere. We did a bathroom 9 years ago and it has a grey unit, but now it's like you can't use anything else!

I'd use grey as a neutral to add colour to not have a totally grey room. I still like it as a base but I like colour & use a lot of blues, always have done

@Kintan It's mainly Instagram, but LivingEtc, elle decoration, Vogue Interiors and architects digest are very good for modern interiors. I also follow New Hampton style- have fun!

YES!

KipperTheFrog · 25/08/2018 20:22

Oops, we're renovating a whole house and I've chosen dark grey kitchen cabinets. With a white quartz worktop and oak flooring. That's the only grey in the house though...

Kintan · 25/08/2018 20:30

VanillaSugar thanks for the recommendations. Have a nice rest of the long weekend :)

Everything eventually becomes old fashioned and dated - even people!
The beauty is though OP, once you become dated, you won't give a toss that your kitchen isn't on trend.

I painted a feature wall gray in my living room just over 10 years ago. It's been around for more than a decade. I still really like it though
