Upstands with no tiles? Grubby walls?

Currently in process of sorting kitchen.
Have picked the Howdens Tewkesbury in Skye which is a lovely sage shaker style and an off white quartz for the worktops for our period house.

I was going to have metro style tiles around the entire border of cabinets/over the cooker. I keep seeing small upstands with nothing around. Does anybody have this? Do your nicely painted walls not get filthy?

Are glass splashbacks a bit naff? To be honest the cost of the kitchen (and utility room) are spiralling our of control Blush but with a family tiling is a must surely?

We have no upstand at all and have only tiled behind the hob. Easy to keep clean or touch up the paint.

Vitalogy · 24/08/2018 19:11

Have you just got sealer along the back edge OliviaBenson?

Freshprincess · 24/08/2018 19:14

Upstands and painted wall everywhere apart from the glass splash back behind the cooker (like everyone else). We didn't go for tiles purely down to the costs of tiling, but actually it looks better.

I have recently scrubbed all the walls clean, with one of those magic erasers and it looks fine.

Before this kitchen we had it all tiled and the grout looked awful and was an arse to keep clean.

Penelope, an upstanding is an early extension of the worktop on the wall.

agedknees · 24/08/2018 19:27

Ignore previous post. It’s an extension of the worktop on the Wall.

It didn't even occur to me to have tiles in the kitchen. None that I have have ever had tiles. S rubbsbke paint is fine

Worieddd · 24/08/2018 21:52

Can I see some pics of everyone’s glass splashbacks against sinks and cookers?

This is my glass splashback from Argos, £25:

Those with upstands and a splashback behind the cooker, does splashback sit on top of upstand or no upstand where splashback is?

PrimalLass · 25/08/2018 07:49

I love tiles. We used dark grey grout to avoid the mucky thing.

Shutupsidney · 25/08/2018 08:50

I have a range and it has an upstand so my splashback is tucked down and then goes to the ceiling.

EmmaC78 · 25/08/2018 09:02

Pamster - no upstand underneath the splashback.

foulmouthflora1 · 25/08/2018 09:22

Previous kitchen, traditional, granite worktop and matching upstands. No tiles. Upstands increased in height behind hob and sink to make a splashback. Loved it.

Current kitchen, traditional, wooden worktop, no upstands, no splashback.

Both kept surprisingly clean. Just wipe any mess.

ballseditupagain · 25/08/2018 09:31

We started off with upstands. Kitchen never really looked finished and despite replastering there were little gaps round the top. Have tiled since. So much cleaner looking.

Makemineboozefree · 25/08/2018 09:35

We have 100mm upstands, white walls and no tiles and it's fine - much easier to keep clean than tile grouting unless you go for dark grouting.

cansu · 25/08/2018 09:39

Have just had kitchen done and had tiles behind hob and around sink but left one area tileless as it was just behind a worktop where breadbin etc lived. I do regret it as wall already slightly grubby looking. I will be getting it tiled asap.

HomeOfMyOwn · 25/08/2018 10:21

Pamster its just the splashback behind cooker and upstands everywhere else.

RatRolyPoly · 25/08/2018 10:32

No tiles at all here either. We have used Dulux diamond Matt (colour matched f&b) and it is AMAZING.

Worieddd · 25/08/2018 12:08

In all honesty that splashback does nothing for me Vitalogy

Have to agree with ballseditupagain Kitchen never really looked finished and despite replastering there were little gaps round the top.
I feel like the kitchen will be incomplete without tiles

Does everyone have a clear glass back splash? Agree with PP - I am looking for something more invisible, less shiny and thin really - is there anything else that would work?

Also where does the back splash go to ? the ceiling ?

RNBrie · 25/08/2018 14:33

Www.diysplashbacks.co.uk do a Matt glass finish which isn't shiny but it is a bit green (apparently!). Think they'll send you a sample though.

Our upstands and splashback are coloured glass, a very pale grey, they weren't our choice but they look very smart.

Vitalogy · 25/08/2018 17:13

Those with upstands and a splashback behind the cooker, does splashback sit on top of upstand or no upstand where splashback is? Mine just sits on top of the upstand. I wasn't going to start cutting out part of the upstand. I think it looks neat the way I have it.

In all honesty that splashback does nothing for me That's fair enough. I thought it was good value too.

Kitchen never really looked finished and despite replastering there were little gaps round the top. What, the worktop or ceiling?

OliviaBenson · 25/08/2018 18:25

You can probably guess my pick op Wink

I don't think you need to fill the entire length wall with the long run, but that's me.

Dickybow321 · 26/08/2018 00:20

OP, never mind about the upstand dilemma.... you should be more worried about the fact that you're looking at a Wren kitchen. They have abysmal reviews on this board as well as on the Internet in general Shock

Worieddd · 26/08/2018 03:56

Ha Dickybow321 worry not! I have already purchased said kitchen from Howdens I was just looking at tiling and work top ideas for sage kitchens Smile
