Measuring stairs for carpet

Dinodan · 19/08/2018 17:56

I need to buy a new carpet, my upstairs landing is 5m x 2m, down stairs hall is 4m x 3m, and my stairs are 8m x 1m I've over measured to the nearest meter.

So does that mean I need 30 square meters?

Not unless you’re intending to stick bits together like patchwork... you need to buy pieces they will allow the correct lengths. Give your supplier the measurements and ask what’s most economical with their rolls.

But yes, the total area is 30m2.

Yes, you've got to factor in the roll width. I plotted it out on a spreadsheet! I think rounding up to the nearest meter is excessive. I think my carpet fitter said 10cm was fine.

The lesson I learnt (too late) is the one PP already said: the supplier will work it out for you and cut it for you too if you want.

ask a carpet fitter round to measure up, then tell them you haven't decided on a carpet just yet - then you can go anywhere with the measurements.

I would get someone to measure up for you. When we did our stairs the store came out to do it. They calculated a lot less than I had, then when it came to fitting they were short so had to get an extra bit. They do put it together a bit like patchwork though. It has a stripe so was more complicated.
