Duvets for viewing - white or prints?

I was thinking white/ cream - will that be too boring? Shall I get some nice simple light prints instead?

I went for white, with a thick throw along the bottom in a nice colour.

Hasthemarketsplit · 18/08/2018 17:03

White / cream, with a throw to tone with the window dressing.

TheChatsPyjamas · 18/08/2018 17:35

I recommend these white ones from ikea www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/textiles-rugs/bedlinen/ofelia-vass-quilt-cover-and-2-pillowcases-white-art-10262987/ - they’re textured so don’t need ironing

loveka · 18/08/2018 18:21

I used plain cotton bedspreads from Soak and Sleep. Really make the bed look 'dressed', can be washed, love 'em. Made it look very high end I thought!

peachypetite · 18/08/2018 18:32

Honestly you're overthinking this. I have viewed three houses today and the bed covers were the least of my worries!

lackingimagination · 18/08/2018 18:39

Don’t think I have ever noticed the exact bed covers when viewing a property.

Lilmisskittykat · 18/08/2018 19:43

Don't worry too much - when I'm viewing a house I'm not expecting the duvet covers to be part of it... just make sure your paint work is nice and any little things are fixed

Activemum81 · 18/08/2018 19:43

Thanks ppl. DH too thinks I’m overthinking :(
I’m worried about EVERYONE looking inside my house

I think it’s worth considering. Of course it wouldn’t sway me to buy a house or not, but definitely helps set the scene. I personally think white bed sheets look clean and fresh, the things I would want to feel when viewing a house.

peachypetite · 18/08/2018 19:54

Don't waste your money unless you were planning on buying new ones anyway.

wowfudge · 18/08/2018 21:08

Yet another thing to think about when preparing for viewings. I wouldn't bother. Clean, tidy and fresh smelling is enough.

BackforGood · 18/08/2018 21:15

Blimey, this is a level of thinking I just could never reach.
In all the houses I've ever viewed, I've never considered what the beds look like, as the vendors take them with them and I bring my own duvet covers which are a complete range of colours / patterns / styles.

I mean, it would stick in my mind if the beds weren't made / had food all over them / the house was a complete mess like my teens bedroom but do people really get swayed by this ???

BubblesBuddy · 18/08/2018 22:56

I think it depends on the house! If it’s expensive top end, it really does matter! I would expect the house to look fairly close to Hotel standards. If it’s a run of the mill house, run of the mill bed covers doesn’t matter. However if you have decorated the bedrooms and got really nice finishes, why spoil the look for the sake of matching, white crisp bed linen!? It’s the whole image you are selling and it says something about the house if it all looks good. Take a look at magazines and The White Company for inspiration. If your rooms have tatty carpets, so so curtains and unattractive paint finishes then white bed linen won’t help you!

Ohyesiam · 18/08/2018 23:02

It’s not about what you notice though is it? It’s about how everything hangs together and gives the place its overall feel. And imho white does this best.

If I love be something I will then check out the detail, but if something jars at first glance then I just don’t like it. So no, you are not over thinking.

RyvitaBrevis · 18/08/2018 23:09

I recently got a white duvet cover for other reasons, and I must say it does make the whole room look and feel better. Not boring at all.

MessySurfaces · 19/08/2018 09:43

Definitely white. And I think you are right to be thinking about this, if you have the headspace. House buying is so complex, the subtle stuff you don't notice has a big effect. We staged like crazy, and sold in days. Next door neighbour didn't, and took 5 months to sell. It's worth it, if you can. (Obviously not if it gives you a nervous breakdown though!)

NapQueen · 19/08/2018 09:44

We usually have white anyways, but pre EA photos I bought a mega cheap new white set from Argos for the photos and viewings. Think it was under a tenner for king duvet/pillowcases and a sheet. They look really good in the pictures.

serbska · 19/08/2018 10:48

People that say they don’t even consider the duvet covers... not consciously but sub-consciously it all helps to make the house seem a lovely, calm space.

specialsubject · 19/08/2018 12:32

cannot remember any bedding in the houses I viewed. Can be superman, batman or those ghastly city scenes, I don't care as you are taking it with you.

things viewers look for apart from location, size and price:

  • tidy outside, all in good repair. No sign of crazy neighbours (I discounted one place on a drive by due to the enormous pile of cobwebbed cat baskets)
  • inside in good repair. I recall opening an airing cupboard to notice not the laundry but the screwdriver jammed into the diverter valve rather than having it repaired. Thanks and goodbye.
  • no smell. Not flowers, coffee, stinking air fresheners, but no smell. And obviously not smoke!
  • reasonable decorative order but not worried as will want to repaint eventually.

not worried about your stuff as you will be taking it with you. I can see past that to how much storage is actually there.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 19/08/2018 12:46

I wouldn't notice a duvet covet cover unless it was a particularly unusual one but a white one may emphasise other things in the bedroom, slightly dingy decor for example and not in a good way...

So only if bedroom is very good all round.

A duvet covet certainly wouldn't sway me to buy a house, I am more interested in size of rooms and storage than a duvet which probably wouldn't be to my taste anyway

DownUdderer · 19/08/2018 13:01

I would stage the house as much as possible, it really is lovely to view a beautifully staged house! You think to yourself ‘the bedrooms look relaxing, and the lounge cozy’.

WhentheDealGoesDown · 19/08/2018 13:08

Well our bedroom is mostly cream and a greeny teal colour, (1930s house) I can't think how bad a white duvet cover stuck on the bed would look, you would surely have to take the whole room into consideration

batshitbetty · 19/08/2018 15:24

I couldn't have told your what any of the beds had on when we were recently viewing! I was looking at layout and space, and the only rooms I paid attention to as far as decoration were kitchen and bathroom

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 20/08/2018 10:50

Unless you were going to buy new anyway, and they will go with the decor, I honestly wouldn't bother. Serious buyers will be much more concerned with basics - location, room sizes, which way the garden faces, whether windows need replacing, etc.

Personally I think there's a lot of rubbish talked about 'dressing' and 'staging'. Clean, tidy, no musty/unpleasant smells, and reasonably uncluttered, are IMO the important things.

Rosemary46 · 20/08/2018 10:54

I wouldn’t buy new, unless you were going to anyway.

But I WOULD stage like crazy. There’s plenty evidence that it works.

People just don’t like to admit that they are swayed by these things, they want to believe that they are superior rational beings who don’t care about anything but the damp proof course and condition of the roof.
