Reese123 · 15/08/2018 13:51

Hi, I want to pave my front garden, it is 6m wide by 3m - any ideas of what this might cost me as I haven’t got a clue

Thanks

It depends on what you are using. I suggest you look at the Marshalls catalogue for the pavers you like. They are really helpful at giving costings per square metre. They are top end price wise so that will give you a max. A builder will usually charge £100 per day per person.

I would start with choosing pavers then get a least 3 estimates.

You need to factor in drainage and you might need planning permission if you want to fully pave it.

BubblesBuddy · 15/08/2018 14:56

Don’t. Adds to flooding in the street. Try and find a partial solution. Some beds and hard paving looks much better then a slab of paving. You need a proper foundation for the skins so they don’t sink and crack. Thousands £ definitely.

bluerunningshoes · 15/08/2018 14:58

check if you are actually allowed to do that first.

if you need it to drive on those rubber mats that lawn can grow through are good.

Reese123 · 15/08/2018 15:53

Rockyrockkate - that is really useful thanks for that

I was planning on including some drainage, I don’t actually park on the driveway as it’s minuscule and I have off street parking

I didn’t think this would cost thousands of pounds it’s actually a very small area that needs to be covered

I spent £1000 to pave ours, don't know dimensions but just big enough to park two cars on it and walk between them, ie not big! They had to clear old stuff away first though. Kept a bit of a border and have a hedge so hoping that helps with drainage. Almost all neighbours have done it.

Reese123 · 15/08/2018 18:55

Nonoannette thanks that is really helpful - where are you based as that sounds really cheap?

I think they say as an estimate £100 per metre. Obviously depends on the stone you use but doubt it will be any cheaper than £100.

Nononannette · 15/08/2018 19:08

Scotland. It's just slabs though, fancier ones would be more. Included skip hire.

Reese123 · 16/08/2018 06:57

Nonoannette - thanks for the info

My garden is being done today! It’s chucking it down so hoping they’ll still arrive. I’m not having paving but I’m paying £185 (+Vat) for two people per day plus materials if that is any help.

Ginorchoc · 16/08/2018 07:03

Oh and they’ve just won some award for their garden at Buckingham Palace Grin they’ve come back down to earth with my small garden! (East Midlands)

Alexalee · 16/08/2018 07:44

100 a day for a tradesman.... where do you live? South London 150 is absolute minimum... most charge 200 a man now.
Block paving is 50/m2 labour only... materials probably same again. So around 2000

cloudtree · 16/08/2018 07:51

Ive just had a large patio done. Most quotes were around £55-65 a square metre for labour. Materials will of course depend entirely on what slabs you choose.

Reese123 · 16/08/2018 10:53

Ginorchoc, Alexalee and cloudtree thanks that’s given me a good idea for how much this should cost. I’m based south of the river in Croydon so hopefully it should be around the £60sqm mark

If anyone has any recommendations for anyone they have used that would be great

You'll also need a skip (or maybe even two depending on what needs to be dug out). You then need to buy slabs, hardcore, sand, cement, grout (if you're not going down the soft sand route), drainage stuff, potentially bonding agent for the slabs depending on the slabs and potentially plasticiser for the mortar (again depending on what you choose).

On top of that a labour only quote will probably not include things like hire of a compactor, hire of a mini digger, hire of a cement mixer etc. Check this since its easy to find that the cost of the "labour" is significantly more than you originally thought.

VeniVidiWeeWee · 16/08/2018 17:39

As Olivia said you may well need planning permission. Give planning at Croydon a call.

Reese123 · 27/08/2018 17:39

I’ve received a quote which is £4K excluding VAT to lay the block paving for an area of 28sq metres. The quote includes excavating and clearing front area, laying concrete sub base, fitting draining channel and connecting into soakaway and laying pathway.

Can anyone with experience of this please let me know if they think this is reasonable? It works out as £141 per sq mtr excl VAT and £169 per sq mtr incl VAT

Hi - is anyone able to provide any advice on whether £4.7k is a reasonable quote for block paving 25sqm? Thank you
