Kitchen island/table

anyone eat on their island at bar/worktop height?
Trying to decide whether to make it multi level. I think I like my feet on the floor and I have a back problem which means I need a bit more support. Can't imagine long social dinners at an island.

Our kitchen is very similar dimensions to yours OP but we don't have a dining table in there. We were restricted by several features and it's too narrow at one end so we have an L shaped island, which reflects the way some of the units go round a corner, at the wider end. The island has bar stool seating on the outside short side of the L and at right angles to that. I like Olivia's sketch of 06.46 and would look at having a peninsula on the end by the table too. We have a separate dining room off the kitchen but it's open with no door.

Thinking how you would complete tasks in the kitchen is a really useful way of sense checking what does and doesn't work - so making a hot drink, prepping a meal and so on. If you are zig-zagging all over the place and the kettle is at the other end from the fridge then it's not going to work.

Good points wow. Zones that kitchen designers generally highlight are storage, bins and recycling, sink/dishwasher, prepping, hob cooking, tea/snack making. Also who and how it is used....eg I have 4 teenagers and their friends under my feet often cooking up a storm at random times (it’s been a loooooong school holiday)

As I said before main sink on my island has been unsightly on my island.....so my new kitchen will have double sinks and DW out of the way - and an additional small veg prep sink with boiling water tap in corner of peninsula - so rest of my (big and busy) family can make drinks from both sides.

Thanks
Yes- wow- it’s driving me crazy at the moment zigzagging all over the place just to make a cup of tea! I think my plan will work.
Sorry but I like the long run, I want a very sleek look, I don’t want it broken up by anything. I don’t want bits of kitchen on each wall. Two of those cupboards hide the toaster away, and give me a little prep area for snacks.

If you are having a table there then put the ovens opposite the island because they're inviting an accident being behind where someone could be sitting.

Still not my thing op, but you clearly have your heart set on it. 🤷‍♀️

Yeah no-one else seems to like it

I think the layout is fine - but just have a lovely separate table at the end?

Swap the FF/larders and ovens so that you can access drinks (wine) easier from dining table and ovens are out of the way.

Tomboytown · 03/09/2018 16:58

My prep area is in the island by the sink, so I need the FF to to be there, not 5 metres away. That was the only issue with my last kitchen and I wanted to change that.
My ovens are in that position now and never had any problems with people at the table.

I’m really happy with the layout, how everything works together. It’s handmade, bespoke, local company. I love the cabinets, the corian. I could always just use my own oak table, that’s originally what I wanted, but I think anything other than something a bit funky would look out of place.

Fab - in looks great. Bet you are excited - it’s good when a bit of debate leads you to exactly what YOU need and want.
Just a thought - and it’s only personal preference - but would the wooden table section work better (feel more sociable) if round or oval rather than rectangle - might be a nice contrast / cosier feel to the over all linear layout?
